Brewers first baseman Corey Hart will undergo surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus this coming Tuesday in Milwaukee, the Brewers announced Friday afternoon. The club estimates Hart's recovery time at three to four months.
Even if Hart makes a quick recovery and is only rehabbing for three months, that puts him at April 22, and he'd then obviously need a minor-league rehab stint before getting back with the Brewers. So he's going to miss a chunk of the early part of the 2013 season.
It looks like Mat Gamel will be the Brewers' first baseman when the season opens. Coincidentally, Gamel was the first baseman with Hart playing outfield until a knee injury ended Gamel's 2012 season. He was hitting .246/.293/.348 with a homer and six RBI in 21 games before his injury.
Hart, a 30-year-old two-time All-Star, hit .270/.334/.507 with 30 homers, 83 RBI, 91 runs and 35 doubles last season, so this is obviously a significant blow for the Brewers' offense.
