On Wednesday night, Darwin Barney of the Cubs set the National League record for most consecutive errorless games when he notched his 114th straight contest without an "E4." Barney tied David Eckstein's NL mark on Tuesday night and not long ago broke Ryne Sandberg's franchise record of 90 consecutive games.
Barney's history-making night was not without come controversy, however. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Barney attempted to cut down Brewers shortstop Jean Segura at third base, but Barney's throw bounced off the glove of Carlos Valbuena ...
At first, the official scorer deemed it an error on Barney, but after further contemplation he switched it to an error on Valbuena. Seven outs later, the record was set.
Barney hasn't made an error since April 17. As he recently told Rick Telander of the Chicago Sun-Times, he needs no help remembering the particulars of it more than four months later: "It was a chopper to me to the off hand, and for some reason I felt I had to charge it," Barney said. "I ran into a bad hop, and it just gobbled me up. I was a little upset about it. If I had just sat and waited, I would have caught it easily at my waist. I just overthought Jose Reyes’ speed. You learn from it and try not to make the same mistake again."
On the season, the 26-year-old Barney is batting .257/.298/368.
