Tigers starting pitcher Doug Fister will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a left costochondral strain, the Tigers announced via press release Saturday night. In layman's terms, that's a strain on the ribcage. There's no word yet on a timetable for his return.
Right-handed relief pitcher Brayan Villarreal will be recalled as a corresponding move.
Fister left his start Saturday afternoon after 3 2/3 shutout innings against the Red Sox in an eventual 10-0 victory for the Tigers.
The options for the Tigers now appear to be either going with Duane Below -- who relieved Fister Saturday -- in Fister's rotation spot or to promote either Andrew Oliver or Jacob Turner from the minors, once Fister's turn comes back in the rotation. Also, one has to wonder if the Tigers get in touch with Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo about left-hander John Lannan. Lannan was demoted to Triple-A this spring by the Nats and demanded a trade in the aftermath. Below sliding into the spot seems like the most logical option, but it's not a sure thing.
