The Royals let Jose Mijares and his 2.56 ERA go for nothing in return. (US Presswire) |
It apparently wasn't enough that the Giants got Melky Cabrera from the Royals this offseason for Jonathan Sanchez, now San Francisco has claimed Royals reliever Jose Mijares off of waivers.
Royals general manager Dayton Moore apparently didn't like the sound of a lefty with a 2.56 ERA in 51 games that's making less than a million dollars and has two more years of team control -- so they just let him go to San Francisco.
What's nearly as baffling is that nobody else in the American League bothered to put a claim on him, nor did any National League team with a worse record than the Giants' 59-49 mark (which is everyone but the Reds, Nationals, Braves and Pirates).
Mijares has given up four earned runs in his last four outings -- spanning just an inning of work. But overall, he's been very good this season for Kansas City as a left-handed specialist. And now he's a Giant and the Royals get zero in return.
