Aubrey Huff entered Saturday's game against the Mets with over 10,000 innings in the field in Major League Baseball. He'd played only on the corners (first base, third base, left field and right field). And he's pretty well recognized as a bad defensive player at any of those corners.
So, yeah, when I saw "2B" next to his name on Gametracker I thought it was a mistake. But it's not. Aubrey Huff is playing second base.
The move happened after Brandon Belt's pinch-hit "double" -- which was actually a pop up to shallow center field that Kirk Nieuwenhuis embarrassingly overran -- tied the game at four in the top of the ninth. The Giants' usual backup middle infielder, Ryan Theriot, is battling illness. So manager Brucy Bochy decided to keep Belt in the game, double-switch shortstop Brandon Crawford out of the game, slide second baseman Emmanuel Burriss to short and Huff to second.
UPDATE: Sure enough, Huff accidentally broke toward first instead of second on a tailor-made double play ball that could have ended the bottom of the ninth. Instead, it loaded the bases and the Mets won on a Buster Posey throwing error.
