According to CSN Bay Area's Andrew Baggarly, the Giants are not satisfied with the "condition and dedication" of third baseman Pablo Sandoval.
Sandoval, who's nearing a return after undergoing surgery on his left hand about a month ago (June 12 is his likely activation date), recently met with manager Bruce Bochy, and Bochy was left wondering whether Sandoval was in any shape to return to the hot corner. "He's been told we have enough first basemen," Bochy said afterward.
There's no doubting Sandoval's heart-of-the-order abilities with the bat, but there is some doubting his listed weight of 240. And what with Brandon Belt, Brett Pill and Aubrey Huff already on the roster, Bochy's right that they don't have the luxury of being able to move Sandoval to the left end of the defensive spectrum.
On a more general level, there's not much of an excuse for a professional athlete, absent some kind of glandular disorder or chemical imbalance, to be overweight to the extent that it impedes his or her performance. Sandoval's body is his most valuable tool, and he should be a better steward of it.
