The Miami Marlins are considering promoting top pitching prospect Jose Fernandez to the major-league rotation next summer, according to the Palm Beach Post's Joe Capozzi.
Fernandez is 14-1 in 25 starts between Class-A ball and Class-A Advanced with a 1.75 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 158 strikeouts in 134 innings this season. He turned 20 years old on July 31. The 2011 first-round pick pitched for the World team in the 2012 Futures game.
Capozzi writes that Fernandez will most likely start the 2013 season at Double-A, but another top-notch performance at that level could put him in the Miami rotation by June.
The Marlins have starters Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco and Mark Buehrle locked into eight-figure contracts next year, but Johnson and Nolasco are both free agents in 2014.
