The Mets have discussed pitchers Shaun Marcum, Carl Pavano and Chris Young, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman. Adam Rubin from ESPN initially reported the team’s interest in Pavano and Young.
Mets GM Sandy Alderson said that the club is looking to sign a pitcher who would immediately slot into the rotation. He’s not looking for a player who will compete with Jenrry Mejia and Jeremy Hefner for a job. Rubin believes Marcum would likely command more money than either Pavano or Young, which could price him out of the Mets’ plans.
The 31-year-old Marcum had a 3.70 ERA and a 4.10 FIP in 124 innings last season with the Brewers. He missed significant time last year with elbow problems. Pavano, 37, threw just 63 innings with the Twins last season with a 6.00 ERA and 4.38 FIP. Young had somewhat of a comeback season in 2012, seeing his highest innings total since 2007. In 115 innings pitched, Young had a 4.15 ERA and a 4.50 FIP with the Mets. He has a lengthy history of injuries.
