The Mets have signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to a minor league deal, the club announced Friday.
Byrd, 35, hit .210/.243/.245 (33 OPS+) over 47 games between the Cubs and Red Sox in 2012. Just weeks after the Red Sox released him in June, Byrd was suspended 50 games for testing positive for Tamoxifen, a drug used to prevent post-testosterone-cycle crashes. Byrd served his suspension as a free agent and was docked 50 games worth of pay (from his contract with the Cubs).
Over an 11-year career split between the Phillies, Rangers, Cubs, Nationals, and Red Sox, Byrd owns a .278/.336/.413 (97 OPS+) line with 82 home runs and 445 RBI.
