The Tigers are looking at two Diamondbacks infielders, plus the latest on Boston's pursuit of Ryan Dempster, Justin Upton's no-trade clause, and the Phillies' predicament as the July 31 non-waiver deadline approaches.

  • The Tigers (47-43), 8-2 in their last 10, and looking to improve on the infield, are interested in Diamondbacks infielders Stephen Drew and Ryan Roberts, reported FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi.
  • Drew only recently returned from a broken right ankle that cost him 11 months, and has a disappointing .579 OPS, albeit in only 13 games.
  • Roberts hasn't been able to duplicate his success of 2009 and 2011. He has an OPS of .640 in 76 games.
  • Trade talks are in the "dialogue" stage.
  • If the Tigers do acquire Drew, they likely won't ask him to change positions, from shortstop to second base, meaning that Jhonny Peralta, Detroit's current shortstop, and the better offensive player this year than both Drew and Roberts, could be headed to Arizona.
  • Peralta has a club option for $6 million in 2013, with a $500,000 buyout. Drew has a mutual option for $10 million next year, with a $1.35 million buyout, while Roberts will be a free agent at season's end, after his one-year, $2.0125 million contract expires.
  • A major-league source has shot down Monday's rumor that the Red Sox are "aggressively pursuing" Ryan Dempster, wrote WEEI.com's Alex Speier.
  • Justin Upton's no-trade list is four teams deep, but that doesn't mean he won't accept a trade to any of those teams, tweeted USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
  • Upton was moved down in the Diamondbacks' order Monday night, to fifth, and responded with a three-hit game. He picked up an RBI, walked once and stole a base.
  • The Phillies' Joe Blanton went eight innings Monday night, allowing six hits and only two earned runs, in registering his eighth win of the season, a 3-2 decision against the Dodgers. The performance will increase his trade value, wrote Comcast Sportsnet's Jim Salisbury. However, if Blanton continues to pitch well, the Phillies might have to keep him, especially if they can stay alive in the playoff race. They've won three of four since the All-Star break, and Roy Halladay returns Tuesday night.
  • More on the Phillies: They're said to be willing to offer Cole Hamels at least $120 million, wrote CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman.
  • The Dodgers could be interested in Jimmy Rollins, wrote CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler. However, as a 10-5 player, Rollins has full no-trade protection.
  • It was a rough Monday night for baseball as far as injuries go, with Joey Votto, Jose Bautista, and David Ortiz going down. Eye on Baseball has you covered with the latest.
