The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired outfielder Travis Snider from the Blue Jays in exchange for right-handed pitcher Brad Lincoln, the Pirates have announced.
Snider, 24, is hitting .250/.300/.556 with three home runs in just 40 plate appearances for the Blue Jays this season. He's spent the bulk of his time this year with Triple-A Las Vegas, where he was hitting .335/.423/.598 with 13 homers and 56 RBI in 56 games.
Snider long been viewed as a player with immense promise, but inconsistency and a crowded Blue Jays outfield have limited his chances to stick in the bigs. He has appeared in games for the Blue Jays in five different seasons, but never more than 82 games in one year.
Expect Snider to get a long look in right field for the Pirates.
Lincoln will join the injury-ravaged Blue Jays' pitching staff. He is 4-2 with a 2.73 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 60 strikeouts in 59 1/3 innings. He's made five starts and 23 relief appearances, so he could be a fit in the rotation for the rest of the season, until Brandon Morrow comes back or just head straight to the bullpen.
This trade is a good example of two clubs dealing from a position of strength to improve a position that is weaker, and it appears to be mutually beneficial.
