The Rangers have signed infielder/outfielder Jeff Baker and left-handed pitcher Nate Robertson to minor-league deals and invited each to spring training, the team announced Saturday.
Baker, 31, hit .239/.279/.378 with four home runs in 201 plate appearances in 2012 playing for the Cubs, Tigers and Braves. He was traded twice in August, each time for a player-to-be-named-later, before reaching free agency for the first time this offseason.
In his career, Baker has played 154 games at second base, 89 games at first base, 89 games at third base, 66 games in right field and 14 games in left field. If he makes the Rangers, it will likely be in a utility role.
Robertson, 35, hasn't pitched in the majors since splitting time between the Marlins and Phillies in 2010. He spent time with the Triple-A affiliates of the Cubs and Blue Jays, as well as the independent-league Wichita Wingnuts, posting an 0-3 record, 6.32 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 37 innings over 26 appearances, including five starts.
