The Phillies have traded veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik to the Red Sox for cash considerations, the Phillies announced Friday night. Podsednik appears to be simply organizational depth, at least initially, as he will report to Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox lost Carl Crawford to a wrist injury before the season started and then Jacoby Ellsbury to a dislocated shoulder last month, so they were thin in the outfield. They have traded for Marlon Byrd in the meantime, but there's nothing wrong with adding another body to the mix. Then again, Podsednik hasn't helped a big-league club for quite a while.
Podsednik, 36, last played in the majors in 2010, when he hit .297/.342/.382 with 35 steals and 63 runs for the Royals (95 games) and Dodgers (39 games). He spent all of 2011 in the minors.
This season, Podsednik was hitting .203/.289/.216 with six stolen bases and 13 runs in 22 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
