How does Scott Podsednik find his way back to the majors for the first time since September 9, 2010? Being in an organization with six -- soon to be seven -- outfielders on the disabled list helps. That's the situation in which the Red Sox find themselves, and it has reportedly cleared the way for a Podsednik promotion, as Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that is indeed what has happened. Podsednik was acquired by the Red Sox in a trade a few weeks ago. He's hit .323/.371/.484 with a homer, six RBI, five runs and two steals in nine games for Pawtucket.
If Ryan Sweeney is placed on the DL, that would leave Daniel Nava, Marlon Byrd, Che-Hsuan Lin and Podsednik as the Red Sox outfielders. That's a far cry from Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury and a Sweeney/Cody Ross platoon.
On the other hand, Adrian Gonzalez will start in right field on Tuesday night, and it's possible that could become a semi-regular arrangement until outfielders start getting healthy. Meanwhile, Will Middlebrooks will stay at third, while the newly activated Kevin Youkilis will ease back into action at first base, Gonzalez's normal position. All of this will greatly benefit the offense and greatly damage the defense.
Amazingly, in the midst of all these injury woes, the Red Sox have won nine of their past 11 games.
