The Brewers are talking to "a couple" of free-agent infielders in the wake of an injury to first baseman Corey Hart that will sideline him for about six weeks, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reported Sunday.

Hart's injury has 27-year-old Mat Gamel sitting atop the Brewers' depth chart at first base. However, outside of prospect and 2012 Southern League MVP Hunter Morris -- the Brewers want him playing full time -- there isn't a clear option to back up Gamel in the organization.

The Brewers also lack shortstop depth. Jean Segura, 23, is slated to start, with 26-year-old Jeff Bianchi currently backing him up. Bianchi hit only .158/.230/.348 in his first major-league season last year and has just a .754 OPS in seven minor-league seasons, and as such the Brewers could look for a more experienced backup in the middle infield as well. Alex Gonzalez, the Brewers' opening-day shortstop last season, could be a possibility, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel added.
