Orioles corner infielder Wilson Betemit has a small cartilage tear and bone bruise in his right wrist and will be shut down for at least a week, Roch Kubatko of MASN reported Thursday.
Betemit has been out of action since Saturday. The Orioles will treat the injury with a cortisone shot with hopes of him returning to action by Aug. 27, his first eligible date to return from the 15-day disabled list.
With Manny Machado called up to play third base, Betemit was likely to be pushed into a platoon role with the right-handed Mark Reynolds at first base. Betemit is a switch-hitter in name only -- he has an .873 OPS against righties this year but just a .414 mark against lefties.
Joe Mahoney will be called up to replace Betemit on the roster. The 25-year-old played one game for Baltimore earlier this season and went 0-for-3; he owns a .263/.317/.390 line for Triple-a Norfolk.
