Marlon Byrd, an All-Star two years ago, is expected to designated for assignment by the Red Sox to make room for Daisuke Matsuzaka on Saturday, ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes reports.
Although the team didn't make the announcement following Friday's loss to the Nationals, they need to make a move to get Matsuzaka on the roster and Byrd was called into Bobby Valentine's office to meet with Valentine and GM Ben Cherington after the game.
The Red Sox acquired the 34-year-old Byrd for minor-league pitcher Michael Bowden in April, and hit .273/.288/.323 for the Red Sox after managing just three hits in 43 at-bats for the Cubs.
