The Cincinnati Reds aren't interested in first baseman Lyle Overbay, tweeted the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay.
-
According to Reds general manager Walt Jocketty, Overbay has defensive shortcomings, and the Reds like what they've seen from Xavier Paul.
-
Overbay, 35, was released by the Diamondbacks on Monday, after he was designated for assignment last week. He's now a free agent, eligible to sign with any team. Overbay's batting .292/.367/.448 in 45 games and 96 at-bats this season, with two home runs and 10 RBI.
-
Overbay still has some value as a platoon player, and could help a contending team down the stretch. He's hitting .305/.383/.476, with two home runs and 10 RBI, against right-handed pitching this season, in 82 at-bats.
- Overbay could have been a short-term replacement for Joey Votto at first base. Votto took part in some of his most extensive running and agility drills on Monday, Fay reported, and is close to full speed, although it's still unknown when he'll return to the Cincinnati lineup.
