The Rockies have signed pitcher Chris Volstad to a one-year, $1.5 million minor-league deal, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
The club has been rumored to be looking for pitching and won’t stop after signing Volstad. The Rockies want to add a veteran starter. Renck mentioned recently that the team was interested in Derek Lowe and Brandon Webb. The Rockies haven’t seen Webb throw this offseason.
The 26-year-old Volstad spent his entire career with the Marlins, before being dealt to the Cubs last year. With Chicago, Volstad had a 6.31 ERA and a 5.11 FIP in 111 1/3 innings. He isn’t a big strikeout pitcher and utilizes a pitch-to-contact approach with his sinker. Volstad has been prone to giving up home runs, a problem that could get worse in Colorado.
