The Rockies are being careful with veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins, limiting his innings despite being in situations where they could use an experienced arm, per MLB.com.
Hawkins did not pitch either Friday or Saturday before coming out of the pen Sunday to face and retire one batter. It's a new way to work for Hawkins, who missed extended time earlier in the year with right biceps tendinitis.
"I've had to pay closer attention to how I feel the last three or four years," he said. "Last year was a different situation because I was closing and wasn't getting that many opportunities, so I was a little fresher."
In eight appearances since returning from the disabled list, Hawkins ERA has dipped from 10.50 to 5.68.
