Reds' Chris Volstad: Gets MiLB deal from Cincinnati
Volstad agreed Sunday with the Reds on a minor-league contract, Doug Gray of RedsMinorLeagues.com reports.
The 33-year-old Volstad brings 772.1 innings worth of MLB experience to the Reds, but he won't be given a chance to compete for a spot on the big club's Opening Day roster. Instead, Volstad will head to the Reds' minor-league camp, where he'll presumably compete for a spot in the Triple-A Louisville or Double-A Chattanooga rotation. Volstad sat out lat season after submitting a 6.27 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over 47.1 innings with the White Sox in 2018.

Volstad was cut loose by the White Sox on Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Volstand was recently designated for assignment after being roughed up by the Angels in a relief appearance last week. He will now look to latch on with a new organization. Through 33 appearances with Chicago this year, he posted a 6.27 ERA and 5.5 K/9.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Designated for assignment
Volstad was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday.
Volstad was cast off the 40-man roster after another rough relief appearance against the Angels on Thursday. Across three innings of work in Los Angeles this series, he allowed eight earned runs off 11 hits. If Volstad goes through the waiver wire unclaimed and remains with the organization, he will report to Triple-A Charlotte.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Knocked around in Anaheim
Volstad was tagged for three earned runs over one inning Thursday against the Angels.
Volstad entered the fold in the eighth inning and was tasked with facing the heart of the Angels' order and he was subsequently knocked around. Mike Trout led things off with a double before Justin Upton brought him around. Volstad later allowed two more runs to score before inducing a popout to end the inning. It's difficult to pin down the White Sox's end game strategy now that Joaquim Soria is Brewer, but if Volstad had designs on challenging for the closing role, this was a poor start. Jace Fry seems to be the leading candidate to close for the Southsiders for now.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Dealt loss Tuesday
Volstad (0-2) was charged with the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out one over just one inning against the Pirates.
Volstad came on in the fifth after Chicago starter Lucas Giolito lasted just four innings, and he was unable to protect a 5-4 lead after yielding three singles and a double. The righty was solid in a spot start earlier in the year, but he's mostly struggled aside from that. He now sports a 5.19 ERA and 1.73 WHIP through nine appearances.

Volstad (0-1) was stuck with the loss Tuesday against the Mariners. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out three over 4.1 innings.
Volstad was thrust into a starting role Tuesday after making his first four appearances in relief this season, including a three-inning outing just three days ago. The 31-year-old was generally effective in Tuesday's loss but was lifted from the contest after throwing 66 pitches. He could be called upon for another start Sunday against the Royals.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Will start Tuesday
Volstad will get the nod Tuesday against Seattle, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
Volstad will make his first start of the season at the big-league level after making four appearances out of the bullpen. His most recent outing was a three-inning long-relief stint Saturday against the Astros, so Volstad could face a limited pitch count Tuesday while throwing on only two days' rest. The 31-year-old right-hander has accrued a 4.70 ERA and 1.57 WHIP across 7.2 innings in 2018.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Put to work immediately
Volstad allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one over a scoreless innings of relief in Thursday's 4-0 loss to the Twins.
Volstad was called up from Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the day, where he was a starter, and will work out of the White Sox's bullpen. The team's bullpen ranks 27th with a 5.35 ERA (3.65 FIP), so anyone that can get outs consistently has a shot at staying in Chicago. The Sox have already jettisoned Juan Minaya (9.00 ERA) and Gregory Infante (6.23 ERA) to Charlotte, giving Volstad his chance.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Joins White Sox on Thursday
Volstad was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday.
In order to make room for the right-hander, Chicago shifted Carlos Rodon (shoulder) to the 60-day disabled list. Volstad just missed out on earning an Opening Day roster spot with the White Sox, but did enough to impress the team in spring training to warrant this promotion. He looked shaky during his first regular-season appearance of 2018 with Charlotte, giving up five earned runs over 4.2 innings in his start Friday. Looking ahead, it's likely that he will be utilized as a multi-inning reliever.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Nailing down bullpen job
Volstad pitched 1.2 scoreless innings while striking out two in Saturday's game against the Dodgers.
Volstad entered the game in the sixth inning with a man on and delivered an inning-ending double-play groundball before pitching a clean seventh inning. The non-roster invitee has not allowed a run over 11 Cactus League innings, spanning seven appearances. That's good work from the former first-round pick and failed starter, who appears to be closing in on a middle-relief job in Chicago's bullpen.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Re-signs with White Sox
Volstad signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox which includes an invitation to spring training, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports.
Volstad is back with Chicago after making six appearances for the White Sox last season, compiling a 4.66 ERA and 10:5 K:BB across 19.1 innings of work in the process. While he made it back to the majors for the first time since 2015, the 31-year-old spent the majority of his 2017 campaign with Triple-A Charlotte, where he posted a 5.57 ERA and 1.56 WHIP across 118 innings (18 starts, 27 appearances). Volstad will likely be viewed as an organizational depth piece again in 2018.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Drops finale to Indians
Volstad (1-2) allowed three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out two batters through six innings to take the loss against Cleveland on Sunday.
The 31-year-old veteran has now made consecutive starts and allowed nine runs through 11 innings. It's not surprising to see Volstad struggle considering he last started in 2012. Considering his career trajectory and track record, it's unlikely Volstad lands on the fantasy radar in 2018.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Plagued by long ball Tuesday
Volstad (1-1) was hit hard in Tuesday's loss to the Angels. He allowed six runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings.
Making his first big-league start since 2012, Volstad was able to retire the side in order in the first inning before running into trouble in the second. The 31-year-old allowed six hits in the frame, including home runs to Brandon Phillips, Luis Valbuena and Mike Trout. He was able to blank the Angels over the next three innings, but the damage had already been done. He'll face another tough test Sunday when he takes on the Indians in Cleveland.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Slated to start Tuesday
Volstad will start Tuesday's game against the Angels, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.
Volstad will step into the rotation Tuesday to make his first major-league start since 2012. The 31-year-old will pitch in place of Carson Fulmer, who had his start pushed back due to a blister on his right index finger. Volstad owns a 1.08 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 8.1 innings out of the White Sox's bullpen this season. He held his own while pitching in relief of Fulmer on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two batters in 4.1 innings.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Wins in relief
Volstad (1-0) allowed one run on three hits while striking out two over 4.1 relief innings to pick up the win in Thursday's 3-1 victory over Houston.
Volstad came on early when starter Carson Fulmer was removed after a third of an inning due to a blister. The 30-year-old Volstad had been a starter for the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte before getting a September callup to supplement the bullpen. Fulmer has two more turns through the rotation before the end of the season. If he's unable to go next Tuesday, Volstad's impressive showing Thursday should put him in line for a spot start.

White Sox's Chris Volstad: Joins White Sox on Friday
Volstad was promoted by the White Sox on Friday.
Volstad has spent the entirety of the 2017 season with Triple-A Charlotte, starting 18 games and appearing in nine out of the bullpen. During those contests, the right-hander has posted a 5.57 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 118 innings. Volstad has last pitched in the majors with Pittsburgh in 2015, but hasn't seen consistent action since 2012 while he was a member of the Cubs. Moving forward, he will likely be used out of the bullpen, and could see time as a middle reliever for the club throughout the rest of the month.
