  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Out of Sunday's lineup

Rizzo is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Rizzo started the previous 10 games but will hit the bench Sunday after going 5-for-33 with one double and four walks during that span. Oswaldo Cabrera will take over at first base and bat eighth in the series finale versus Boston.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Out against left-hander

Rizzo is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Rangers. Rizzo started each of the first two games off the injured list against right-handers but will begin Tuesday's game on the bench as the Rangers send lefty Andrew Heaney to the hill. DJ LeMahieu will draw the start at first base Tuesday.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Activated, will start Sunday

The Yankees reinstated Rizzo (forearm) from the 60-day injured list Sunday. He'll start at first base and bat seventh in the Yankees' series finale with the Cardinals. After Saturday's 6-5 loss to St. Louis, New York optioned Ben Rice to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to reopen a spot on the active roster for Rizzo, who had been on the shelf since June 18 with a right forearm fracture. Rizzo avoided surgery to treat the injury and kicked off a rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset on Aug. 23, with the 35-year-old going 2-for-13 with a solo home run and a 2:6 BB:K in six games in the minors before being activated. Rizzo should replace Rice as the Yankees' primary first baseman against right-handed pitching, though he could lose work versus lefties to either DJ LeMahieu or Oswaldo Cabrera. Before being shut down in June, Rizzo was in the midst of a rough season at the plate, with his .630 OPS over 291 plate appearances representing his worst mark since his 2011 rookie campaign with the Padres.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Expected back Sunday

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Cardinals that Rizzo (forearm) will "likely" be activated Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Rizzo has been out since mid-June with a fractured right forearm, but he is now on the verge of activation after a handful of rehab games in the minors. While Rizzo's performance has declined dramatically in recent years, he figures to slot back in as the team's primary first baseman, especially with fill-in Ben Rice struggling mightily of late. Rizzo sits with a .223/.289/.341 slash line and eight homers through 291 plate appearances this season.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Could be activated Sunday

Rizzo (forearm) could be activated from the 60-day injured list when rosters expand Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Rizzo has gone 2-for-8 with a home run and two walks in four rehab games with Double-A Somerset, serving as the designated hitter twice before playing first base the last two contests. He could play a full nine innings at first base Friday and rejoin the Yankees shortly after that. With the club struggling for production at first base, Rizzo should immediately become the primary option there, at least versus right-handed pitching.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Homers in minor-league rehab game

Rizzo (forearm) went 2-for-2 with a solo home run in a rehab appearance with Double-A Somerset on Tuesday. Rizzo began his rehab assignment Friday and has gone 2-for-6 with two walks, two strikeouts and two runs through three contests. The veteran first baseman is closing in on a return from the 60-day injured list, and he took another step toward that goal Tuesday by playing first base after serving as the designated hitter in his first two games in the minors. Rizzo could immediately reclaim his starting role at first base upon his return to the big club, as Ben Rice has batted .063 with no extra-base hits and a 28.9 percent strikeout rate over 32 at-bats in August following a promising start to his big-league tenure.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Closing in on rehab assignment

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that the team has discussed sending Rizzo (forearm) out on a rehab assignment, though no decision has been reached as to when it would begin, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Rizzo would serve as a designated hitter initially on the rehab assignment before eventually playing time first base. The 35-year-old has been on the injured list since mid-June with a fractured right forearm and is likely trending toward an early September return.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Takes swings Tuesday

Rizzo (forearm) batted in a simulated game against Yankees reliever Ian Hamilton on Tuesday, but the first baseman's return timeline is still undetermined, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. That Rizzo was able to take swings against Hamilton -- who threw his full arsenal of pitches -- is a positive sign that his forearm fracture is healing well, but manager Aaron Boone indicated that the team still wants Rizzo to heal further before sending him off on a rehab assignment. The veteran slugger has been out since mid-June and isn't likely to return to New York's lineup until some time in September.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: 'Full bore,' but lacks timeline

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Rizzo (forearm) recently hit "full bore" off a Trajekt pitching machine, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Rizzo has resumed taking batting practice in recent days, but despite seemingly making good progress in his recovery from a fractured right forearm, the Yankees aren't yet willing to offer up a timeline for his return from the 60-day injured list. If or when Rizzo makes it back from the IL, he may not be guaranteed an everyday role at first base. Rookie Ben Rice (.713 OPS in 150 plate appearances) has outproduced Rizzo (.630 OPS in 291 plate appearances) since getting a promotion from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on June 18, when Rizzo was initially placed on the IL.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Resumes fielding, hitting

Rizzo (forearm) participated in fielding drills Friday and has also begun hitting, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. Rizzo began going through on-field workouts in late July, and it seems he's finally been cleared for baseball activities. There are still no plans in place for him to begin a rehab assignment, though it's still possible the first baseman meets his goal of returning to the Yankees before the end of August.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Goes through agility drills

Rizzo (forearm) went through agility drills on the field Tuesday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Rizzo had been limited to weight-room activities as he recovers from a fractured right forearm, but he's finally been cleared for on-field workouts. He'll continue to ramp things back up, with a return sometime in August being the goal.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Limited to weight-room activities

Rizzo continues to be restricted in his recovery from a fracture of his right forearm, as he's currently limited to activities in the weight room, MLB.com reports. Rizzo said he'd be unable to resume baseball activities for 4-to-5 weeks following his placement on the injured list June 18, so it's not a surprise that he hasn't yet begun to ramp up. The veteran slugger said Friday that he's "feeling good" and that the forearm has "progressed a lot" while acknowledging that he still has "some pain." While Rizzo has been out of action, rookie Ben Rice has stepped up to assume an everyday role at first base.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Yankees transferred Rizzo (forearm) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. The veteran first baseman is expected to be sidelined eight weeks after he landed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a fractured right forearm, so the move to the 60-day IL doesn't come as a major surprise. Rizzo will be shut down from baseball activities for up to five weeks. Gerrit Cole (elbow) was activated from the 60-day IL in a corresponding transaction and is making his season debut Wednesday against the Orioles.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Sidelined for eight weeks

The Yankees placed Rizzo on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right forearm fracture. Per Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, Rizzo will be shut down from all activities for up to five weeks, and it will be eight weeks until he's ready to play in games. Ben Rice is up to take his roster spot and is starting at first base Tuesday against the Orioles in his major-league debut. The Yankees also figure to use DJ LeMahieu at first base and Oswaldo Cabrera at third base some days while Rizzo is shelved.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Shut down for multiple weeks

Rizzo (arm) said Tuesday that he will be shut down from all baseball activities for 4-5 weeks, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. When it was revealed Monday that Rizzo is dealing with a fracture to the radial neck of his right arm, the initial timetable of up to six weeks was provided. However, this latest report suggests a six-week absence could be a worst-case scenario. For his part, Rizzo said Tuesday he expects to play again this season. Ben Rice will be called up to take his spot on the Yankees' active roster.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Dealing with arm fracture

Rizzo (arm) suffered a fracture to the radial neck of his right arm in Sunday's 9-3 loss to the Red Sox and could miss 4-to-6 weeks, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Rizzo suffered the injury in the seventh inning, when he collided with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino while running to first base. With the Yankees off Monday, Rizzo appears likely to be placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. In Rizzo's absence -- which could extend until after the All-Star break -- DJ LeMahieu could serve as the primary replacement at first base, while Oswaldo Cabrera picks up some extra starts at the hot corner.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Dealing with lower-arm injury

Rizzo (arm) suffered a right lower-arm injury in Sunday's 9-3 loss to the Red Sox, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Rizzo went down in a heap after a collision with Boston reliever Brennan Bernardino at first base in the top of the seventh inning, suffering an apparent right arm injury. The first baseman will see the team doctors and undergo imaging to determine the severity of the injury in New York on Monday.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Leaves game after collision

Rizzo (undisclosed) exited Sunday's contest against the Red Sox in the top of the seventh inning, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Rizzo collided with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino while trying to leg out a hit, landing on his right hand/wrist. Oswaldo Cabrera replaced him in the game. More information on Rizzo's status will likely come following the conclusion of the contest.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Breaks homer drought

Rizzo went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Royals. The first baseman snapped a streak of 27 games without a long ball when he took John Schreiber deep in the eighth inning. Rizzo received back-to-back days off earlier this week for a mental reset, and he entered Thursday's game in a 2-for-37 slump during June. He currently sits at .223/.282/.344 slash line with eight home runs and 27 RBI for the season.

  • Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Held out again Monday

Rizzo is absent from the lineup for Monday's game in Kansas City. Yankees manager Aaron Boone had indicated the struggling Rizzo would receive a second straight day off, and that's exactly what will happen. Rizzo has just one hit over his last 29 at-bats. DJ LeMahieu will handle first base Monday while Oswaldo Cabrera plays third base.
