Jesus Sucre: Hits open market
Sucre officially elected free agency Tuesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
The 31-year-old cracked the Orioles' Opening Day roster as a second catcher but appeared in only 21 contests for the big club before being outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk in late April. He'll likely have to settle for a minor-league deal as he heads to the open market this winter.

Sucre was designated for assignment Sunday, and after making it through waivers, he chose to accept an assignment with the Tides. The veteran backstop will serve as organizational depth for the Orioles moving forward.

Sucre signed a minor-league deal with the Orioles in early February but has remained in his native Venezuela as he sorted out the visa issues. Based on Hyde's comments, it doesn't sound as though Sucre will be ready to make his Grapefruit League debut until March while his arrival in North America remains delayed. The missed action isn't ideal for a non-roster invitee who isn't assured an Opening Day gig with the big club, though Hyde stressed that there's still enough time for Sucre to stake a claim to the No. 2 catcher job.
