  • Cubs' Drew Pomeranz: Back in majors with Cubs

The Cubs selected Pomeranz's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Pomeranz was cut loose by the Angels in mid-June after turning in a 5.01 ERA and 16:12 K:BB across 23.1 innings. The veteran left-hander excelled with the Cubs in 2025, logging a 2.17 ERA and 57:15 K:BB over 49.2 innings, and he'll aim to rediscover that form after making two scoreless appearances for Iowa.

  • Cubs' Drew Pomeranz: Back with Cubs on MiLB deal

The Cubs signed Pomeranz to a minor-league contract June 22.

Pomeranz was released by the Angels earlier this month after posting a 5.01 ERA and 16:12 K:BB across 23.1 frames. The left-hander quickly latched on with the Cubs and turned in a scoreless outing at Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. Pomeranz put up a 2.17 ERA and 57:15 K:BB over 49.2 innings for the Cubs last season and could get another chance with the big club if he finds his rhythm at Iowa.

  • Drew Pomeranz: Released by Angels

Pomeranz was released by the Angels on Thursday.

Pomeranz was designated for assignment by the Angels on Monday, and now that he's cleared waivers without being claimed, he'll hit the open market. The southpaw struggled to a 5.01 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with 16 strikeouts while recording seven holds and two blown saves over 23.1 innings in 25 appearances with the Angels this season. Pomeranz posted an impressive 2.17 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with 57 punchouts over 49.2 innings in 57 appearances (four starts) with the Cubs in 2025, so he could still draw some interest as a free agent.

  • Angels' Drew Pomeranz: DFA'd by Halos

The Angels designated Pomeranz for assignment Monday.

Pomeranz had been unscored upon in seven of eight appearances since returning from left elbow inflammation, but he had a 4:4 K:BB over 8.1 innings during that stretch and a 5.01 ERA and 16:12 K:BB across 23.1 frames on the season. Given his $4 million salary, Pomeranz is sure to clear waivers, but the 37-year-old should quickly land in a new organization after that happens.

  • Angels' Drew Pomeranz: Activated from injured list

The Angels activated Pomeranz (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Pomeranz needed just a minimum stay on the IL while recovering from left elbow inflammation. He skipped a rehab assignment and will return to a setup role in the Angels' bullpen. Pomeranz has struggled this season, posting a 7.20 ERA and 12:8 K:BB over 15 frames.

  • Angels' Drew Pomeranz: Faces hitters Saturday

Pomeranz (elbow) threw a live bullpen session Saturday, per MLB.com.

Pomeranz had previously been throwing bullpens, but this was his first time facing live hitters since he landed on the injured list May 13. The Angels and Pomeranz have each stated that the reliever isn't dealing with a major issue and have expressed hope that he'll be ready to return to the team's bullpen when first eligible May 28.

  • Angels' Drew Pomeranz: Throwing bullpens

Pomeranz (elbow) tossed a bullpen session Thursday, per MLB.com.

The BP was Pomeranz's second since landing on the 15-day injured list May 13. Manager Kurt Suzuki depicted the move as caution on the Angels' part, and the veteran reliever has indicated that he's in line for a minimum IL stay. Given that he's already tossed multiple bullpens, it still seems very feasible that Pomeranz will be activated when first eligible May 28.

  • Angels' Drew Pomeranz: Anticipates minimum stay

Pomeranz (elbow) said Friday that he doesn't expect to need more than a minimum-length stay on the injured list, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Pomeranz landed on the injured list Wednesday with inflammation in his left elbow, but he said his injury isn't anything serious. Assuming the organization agrees with the timeline the 37-year-old laid out for himself, he'll return to the Angels' bullpen May 28.

  • Angels' Drew Pomeranz: Lands on injured list

The Angels placed Pomeranz on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to elbow inflammation, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Pomeranz appeared in relief for an inning Tuesday against Cleveland, which is presumably when he suffered the injury. The 37-year-old has made 17 appearances with a rocky 7.20 ERA this season. Ryan Johnson was activated from the IL in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' Drew Pomeranz: Continues to struggle

Pomeranz (0-3) took the loss against the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while retiring only one batter in the 10th inning.

After the Angels were unable to push across a run in the top of the 10th, Pomeranz was tasked with keeping Chicago off the board in the bottom of the frame. He intentionally walked the first batter he faced, then walked another before giving up a walk-off single with one out. Pomeranz was considered a closer candidate after Jordan Romano was DFA'd on April 16, but the lefty has struggled mightily since then, giving up four runs on four hits (including three homers) while being charged with two blown saves and a loss over three outings. It wouldn't be surprising if the Angels look to other options for high-leverage work until Pomeranz gets back on track.

  • Angels' Drew Pomeranz: Blows save chance

Pomeranz took a blown save in Sunday's 11-9 extra-inning loss to the Royals, allowing one run on one hit over one-third of an inning. He didn't strike out or walk a batter.

Pomeranz was brought into a tough spot after Brent Suter allowed a two-out RBI single to Salvador Perez. The switch didn't work out, as Jac Caglianone tied the game with a two-run home run, sticking Pomeranz with his first blown save of the season. Over 11 appearances, Pomeranz has a 7.84 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 7:5 K:BB through 10.1 innings. The Angels designated Jordan Romano for assignment Sunday, but Pomeranz's performance has hardly been encouraging in the late innings. Kirby Yates (knee) is on a rehab assignment and will likely get the chance to close once he's off the injured list, relegating Pomeranz back to a setup role if he can keep his spot on the major-league roster. Ben Joyce (shoulder) could also be in the long-term mix for saves, but he is still working his way back from a torn labrum.
