  • Wily Peralta: Cut loose by Pittsburgh

The Pirates released Peralta on Sunday.

The right-hander was cut loose after posting a 7.44 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 32.2 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis. Peralta last pitched in the big leagues in 2022 with the Tigers and doesn't appear close to resurfacing in the majors now that he's a free agent coming off a poor showing at the Triple-A level.

  • Pirates' Wily Peralta: Invited to Pirates camp

Peralta signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Peralta was at Triple-A Rochester in the Nationals organization for the duration of the 2023 season, holding a 6.31 ERA over 24 starts. He did have a two-year run with the Tigers from 2021-22 when he posted a 2.93 ERA, although that came with a 90:62 K:BB over 132 innings. It's not clear whether the Pirates plan to utilize Peralta as rotation or bullpen depth, but he's unlikely to be much of a factor either way.

  • Nationals' Wily Peralta: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Peralta was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Nationals on Saturday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Peralta was signed to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training by the Nationals at the end of January. He really struggled for most of his Grapefruit League appearances as seen in an 11.17 ERA, 2.48 WHIP and 6:5 K:BB. The right-hander could have an opt-out in his deal, so he may have to decide if he wants to head to Triple-A Rocester or test the waters of free agency.

  • Nationals' Wily Peralta: Looks good in Thursday's start

Peralta gave up three hits and struck out two over three scoreless innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.

Facing a lineup made up of bench players and a couple top prospects like Brett Baty, Peralta cruised through his first start of the spring. The veteran right-hander hasn't pitched poorly in camp, posting a 6:2 K:BB through 8.1 innings over six appearances, and with Cade Cavalli lost for the season to Tommy John surgery, the Nationals do have a rotation vacancy. Chad Kuhl is expected to get the first shot at filling it, but Peralta might be next in line. A long-relief role to begin the season seems more likely, however.

  • Nationals' Wily Peralta: Getting stretched out as starter

Peralta will be stretched out for a potential starting role in spring training, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

The veteran right-hander mostly worked as a reliever last season with Detroit but had some success in the rotation in 2021 and posted a 3.07 ERA over 93.2 innings, although that masked a 4.93 FIP and woefully low 14.4 percent strikeout rate. Peralta is in camp as a non-roster invitee, but he would seem to have a good chance of making the Opening Day roster. "I know Willie had some success in the bullpen role as a long guy," Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday. "But we are looking for him to come here and lengthen him out to start." Washington is hoping youngsters like Cade Cavalli (shoulder) and MacKenzie Gore can handle regular starting roles, but if they prove not to be ready, there could be opportunities for the likes of Peralta to take on bigger workloads in 2023 than expected.

  • Nationals' Wily Peralta: Signs NRI deal with Washington

Peralta signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Tuesday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, per Andrew Golden of the Washington Post.

Peralta posted a shiny 2.58 ERA over 38.1 innings with the Tigers in 2022, but he issued 24 walks along the way and was ultimately cut loose by Detroit in August. The 33-year-old right-hander can maybe be a useful swingman type for the rebuilding Nats in 2023 if he shows well in that capacity this spring. He has plenty of past big-league experience as both a starter and reliever.

  • Wily Peralta: Cut loose by Detroit

The Tigers granted Peralta his release Monday after clearing waivers.

Peralta was moved off the 40-man roster Friday after turning in a 2.58 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 32:24 K:BB across 38.1 innings over his 28 appearances with Detroit. Now a free agent, the 33-year-old right-hander could have appeal to an organization looking to add an experienced multi-inning option out of the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Designated for assignment

Peralta was designated for assignment Friday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

The Tigers want to get a look at their younger pitchers over the final six weeks of the season. Peralta had a 2.58 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 32 strikeouts in 38.1 innings through 28 appearances.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Struggles Sunday

Peralta allowed two runs on three hits in an inning of relief during Sunday's loss to the White Sox. He walked one and struck out two.

Making his fourth appearance since returning from the injured list earlier this month, Peralta had an uncharacteristically rough outing. It was only the third time this season he's given up two runs in a game. That's allowed Peralta to carry a strong 2.65 ERA, and he should stick in a relief role for the Tigers, though he could potentially pick up some starts due to the club's injury woes in the rotation. Peralta has started once this season but made 18 starts for Detroit last year, when he turned in a 3.07 ERA across 93.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Returns from IL

The Tigers reinstated Peralta (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Peralta will step back into a multi-inning role out of the Detroit bullpen now that he's made a full recovery from the strained left hamstring that kept him on the shelf for nearly a month. He made three rehab appearances at Triple-A Toledo prior to being activated, working three innings and striking out six while allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Notches save in rehab outing

Peralta (hamstring) worked around two hits and struck out three in a scoreless inning Wednesday to record a save in his rehab appearance for Triple-A Toledo.

Peralta, who has been on the 15-day injured list since July 6 with a left hamstring strain, needed 19 pitches to retire the side. He could make another appearance or two for Toledo before rejoining the Detroit bullpen.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Nearing rehab assignment

Peralta (hamstring) threw and did some agility work on the field prior to Saturday's game against the Twins, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Peralta landed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain July 6, but the team is hopeful that he'll be able to begin a rehab assignment in the coming days as long as he feels good following Saturday's activity. The right-hander will likely be in the mix to rejoin the Tigers sometime in early August.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Likely out until August

Peralta (hamstring) is unlikely to rejoin the Tigers until at least August, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Peralta landed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday and is dealing with something between a Grade 1 and Grade 2 hamstring strain. He'll be shut down for a week or two and is unlikely to have a more definitive return timetable until he's able to begin a throwing program.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Moved to IL

The Tigers placed Peralta on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a left hamstring strain.

He'll be sidelined through the All-Star break after sustaining the injury during his scoreless 1.1-inning relief appearance in Tuesday's 11-4 win over the Guardians. Detroit recalled Will Vest from Triple-A Toledo to replace Peralta in the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Managing hamstring injury

Peralta is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list after leaving Tuesday's game against the Guardians with a left hamstring spasm, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Peralta delivered 1.1 scoreless frames Tuesday before exiting the contest with the injury. Assuming he is indeed placed on the injured list, the right-hander will be eligible to be reinstated for the start of the second half of the season July 21.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Hit hard Friday

Peralta allowed two runs on three hits in an inning of relief during Friday's loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out two.

The game was long out of reach by the time Peralta entered, as Detroit starter Elvin Rodriguez allowed eight runs in his four innings of work and the Tigers ultimately fell 10-1. It was the first time all season Peralta has allowed more than a single run in an appearance, and he still has a solid 1.54 ERA across 23.1 innings despite the hiccup. He should continue to be a valuable long reliever and spot starter for Detroit.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Starting Tuesday

Peralta will start Tuesday's game against the Pirates.

Tarik Skubal was scheduled to start Tuesday's contest, but due to potential inclement weather, he'll instead start Wednesday. Peralta threw 34 pitches over two innings during his last outing and is unlikely to pitch much deeper in Pittsburgh.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: No longer starting Tuesday

Peralta will not start Tuesday's game against the Pirates, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

The Tigers pushed back Tarik Skubal's start to Wednesday to avoid him being affected by a potential rain delay during the early innings, but the delay actually occurred prior to first pitch, so Skubal will end up starting Tuesday. Peralta, who has an 0.81 ERA over 22.1 innings this season, should be available out of the bullpen for Detroit, per usual.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Earns second win

Peralta (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Twins. He allowed two walks and struck out one.

Peralta entered the game in the fifth inning after Joey Wentz departed with a strained left shoulder. Wentz had staked the Tigers to a 4-0 lead, and Peralta kept the Twins off the board to earn the relief win. The righty has pitched well this season with a 0.81 ERA across 22.1 innings, though his fantasy value is capped as long as he's working as a long reliever and not starting games.

  • Tigers' Wily Peralta: Throws two innings

Peralta allowed a hit and three walks over two scoreless frames in Sunday's loss to Houston. He struck out three batters.

Peralta was used as the opener Sunday and turned in a pair of scoreless frames despite putting four runners on base. He's now thrown 10.1 innings this season without allowing an earned run while registering a 13:7 K:BB. The 33-year-old righty has yet to pitch deeper than the second inning in any appearance this season, but he could be making the case for a real look in the rotation.
