Story (sports hernia) will be re-evaluated at the end of the team's current homestand to determine when he can begin a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.
The Red Sox finish up with the White Sox at Fenway Park on Thursday and then host the Athletics through the weekend before heading out on the road. If Story is ready to begin an assignment, he may need a handful of games, given he's been sidelined since the middle of May. The Red Sox have caught fire without Story and could slow-walk his rehab as to not disrupt the chemistry the club has built while going 30-5 since June 25.

Story underwent surgery for a sports hernia in late May and has been on the 60-day injured list since early June. He's been cleared to take part in full baseball activities, and the good news for the veteran shortstop is that he is getting closer to on-field action in minor-league games. Story would likely need a rather lengthy rehab stint, given the amount of time he's been sidelined for, but it looks like he could be back with the Red Sox by mid-to-late August.

The Red Sox announced June 28 that Story (sports hernia) is taking part in full baseball activities, MLB.com reports.
Story hasn't yet been cleared to do every activity at 100 percent intensity, so until he reaches that benchmark in his recovery from sports hernia surgery, he won't be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 33-year-old shortstop previously said that he expected to miss around eight weeks after undergoing surgery May 21, so he may have a shot at returning from the 60-day injured list at some point shortly after the All-Star break.

Story was originally said to have a groin injury, so the sports hernia diagnosis provides more specificity to the issue he's reportedly been dealing with for much of the season. According to Bill Koch of the Providence Journal, a sports hernia can sideline a player six weeks if surgery isn't needed and about four months if surgical, so Story appears to be facing an extended absence. Andruw Monasterio is starting at shortstop for Boson on Saturday and could pick up regular playing time there in Story's stead.

Story was placed on the 10-day IL on Saturday due to the issue, which he's reportedly been dealing with for much of the season. Story went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Phillies.
Story opened the scoring in the second inning with a 424-foot blast off Andrew Painter, his third homer this year and first since April 15. Coming into Wednesday, Story had gone just 6-for-32 (.188) with a lone extra-base hit in his prior eight games. Overall, he's slashing .211/.250/.311 with 19 RBI, 16 runs scored and four steals across 172 plate appearances this season.
