Twins' Gio Urshela: Inks deal with Minnesota
The Twins signed Urshela to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Urshela spent the 2025 season with the Athletics, slashing .238/.287/.326 with zero home runs, 20 RBI, 10 runs scored and a 13:40 BB:K across 197 plate appearances before being designated for assignment in mid-August. Urshela was eventually released days later but never found a home to close out the 2025 campaign. With Minnesota, 34-year-old Urshela will compete for a corner infielder depth job behind Josh Bell, Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee and Kody Clemens.

The Athletics released Urshela on Sunday.
Urshela will be able to pursue his options on the open market after he cleared waivers upon being designated for assignment Friday. The 33-year-old is regarded as a solid defender at the corner-infield spots, but he provided scarce production with the bat prior to losing his spot on the Athletics' 40-man roster, slashing just .238/.287/.326 over 197 plate appearances.

Urshela missed just under four weeks due to a left hamstring strain. He didn't start Tuesday, but he was the only Athletic to log multiple hits in the contest. It's unclear if he'll be able to regain a regular role in the Athletics' infield -- his best bet for playing time is likely to challenge Max Muncy at third base, though Muncy is hitting a respectable .261 (12-for-46) in June compared to his .211 average on the year. Urshela is at a .240/.290/.360 slash line with no home runs, 14 RBI, four runs scored, 10 doubles, one triple and no stolen bases across 109 plate appearances this season. Even if he gains a starting role in the short term, Miguel Andujar (oblique) could displace Urshela once healthy.

Urshela got seven hits across 14 at-bats with a home run and two doubles in four games during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas.
