Player Outlook
Plans for Jacob deGrom to return from Tommy John surgery in early August failed to manifest, but he logged three abbreviated starts in late September. Pitching with six days rest for each, deGrom surrendered only two earned runs in 10.2 innings, punching out 14 while issuing just one free pass. He averaged 97.3-mph on this four-seam fastball, with a max of 99.4-mph. Fear of missing out enters the chat. Including rehab, deGrom recorded 21.1 frames last season, with only 107.1 combined innings over the prior two years. This was his second Tommy John procedure, and deGrom has experienced shoulder issues as well. There is no right or wrong; rostering deGrom is a matter of risk tolerance, and being prepared in case he misses more time, though even if healthy, the veteran's workload will be tempered. • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Makes second spring start

DeGrom allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three over four innings in Wednesday's Cactus League start against the Mariners. DeGrom made his second Cactus League start but has also built up in minor-league games during the spring. He told Kenndi Landry of MLB.com that he feels good health-wise but was not pleased about his mechanics. Specifically, his shoulder was flying open, and deGrom couldn't keep the ball down with his slider and caught too much of the middle of the plate overall. The Rangers' ace worked his pitch count to 57, which is less than optimal at this stage of the Cactus League, but deGrom is expected to pitch when his turn comes up in the opening week of the regular season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws three innings in minors game

DeGrom (illness) threw three innings in a minor-league game Friday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom had to be scratched from a scheduled appearance Thursday due to a stomach virus, but it wound up setting him back only one day and shouldn't affect his readiness for the start of the season. The Rangers plan to start deGrom at the back end of their rotation once the regular season begins as part of a plan to monitor his workload.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Battling stomach virus

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that DeGrom won't pitch Thursday as initially planned while the right-hander recovers from a stomach virus, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom had been penciled in to start Thursday's Cactus League game against the Giants or in a minor-league contest on the back fields of camp, but he won't be available in any capacity after he apparently fell ill overnight. Assuming he's able to quickly bounce back from the ailment over the next couple of days, deGrom should still be on track to open the season in the Texas rotation, but he can't afford to miss many more throwing sessions at this stage of camp. The Rangers had already been easing deGrom in during spring training, and he built up to 31 pitches in his first Cactus League start Saturday. DeGrom will likely need to push his pitch count into the 60-to-70 range by the end of the spring to head into his first start of the regular season without any major workload restrictions.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Scaling back velocity in 2025

DeGrom plans to dial back the velocity on his pitches this season in an effort to stay healthy, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. DeGrom's average fastball velocity was 96 miles per hour during his best season in 2018, but it climbed each of the three years after that, peaking at 99.2 mph in 2021. Persistent arm trouble accompanied the added velocity, and deGrom hopes pumping the brakes a bit can help keep him on the mound. He averaged 97.3 mph during his three starts last season with the Rangers and sat at 97 mph in his first spring training outing. While the Rangers don't have a strict innings limit with deGrom in 2025, they will manage his workload, which will include starting him at the back end of the rotation when the season begins.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Fires two perfect innings

DeGrom threw two scoreless innings against the Royals in Saturday's Cactus League game, striking out three batters. Making his first appearance of the spring, deGrom threw 31 pitches and didn't allow a baserunner. He struck out both Kyle Isbel and Bobby Witt to open the contest and finished his day off with a strikeout of Tyler Gentry. DeGrom's fastball touched 98 mph, and his slider and curveball looked sharp. The Rangers are going to slowly ramp things up with deGrom, and he's scheduled to again take the mound Thursday against the Giants. He's likely looking at 40-45 pitches in his next start, per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Starting at back end of rotation

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that deGrom will begin the season at "the back end" of the rotation, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. He's expected to make his first regular season start either March 30 versus the Cubs or March 31 against the Reds. DeGrom is considered healthy, but the Rangers are simply allowing the two-time Cy Young Award winner ample time to build up after he missed most of the last two seasons while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. The 36-year-old will make his Cactus League debut Friday against the Rockies and will be built up to five innings by his final spring outing.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws live BP

DeGrom threw live batting practice Saturday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. "He looked good," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He looked like Jacob; the stuff, everything. He felt good. I think he came out of it fine." DeGrom threw 25 pitches (14 strikes) in his first live BP session of spring. One person on hand estimated he was throwing at about 80-to-90 percent. The 36-year-old deGrom is looking for his first full healthy season since 2020; he's made just 35 starts over the last four seasons. Despite what has been a deliberate pace in deGrom's ramp-up, Bochy expects the pitcher to be ready when the regular season begins. He'll make his first spring start this coming Friday.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Making Cactus League debut Friday

DeGrom will make his first Cactus League start next Friday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. DeGrom is set to throw his first round of live batting practice Saturday in preparation for his first spring start, after spending the past few weeks throwing bullpen sessions. The veteran right-hander will have slightly less than three weeks after his first spring appearance to ramp up for Opening Day. Given he missed most of the last two seasons, it seems likely he begins the season under some workload restrictions.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: On track for mid-March spring debut

DeGrom will throw the first of what will likely be a few live batting practice sessions this weekend before he'll be ready to appear in a Cactus League game, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. That schedule likely lines deGrom up to make his Cactus League debut in the second week of March. It's a quick turnaround between then and Opening Day, but the Rangers are understandably being careful with deGrom this spring after he missed most of the last two seasons following Tommy John surgery in June 2023, the second of his career. The two-time Cy Young winner might have a relatively limited workload early on this season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws first session at camp

DeGrom threw a bullpen session Saturday, his first since the start of training camp, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. DeGrom entered camp healthy after dealing with a second Tommy John elbow surgery that wiped out much of 2023 and 2024. The right-hander made three starts last September and recorded a 1.69 ERA over 10.2 innings. A healthy deGrom is key for the Rangers, who have won seven of the pitcher's nine starts over the last two seasons.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Five strikeouts in final turn

DeGrom came away with a no-decision in Friday's 5-2 win over the Angels, allowing one run on four hits over four innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. The 36-year-old right-hander was sharp in his final start of 2024, topping out at 98.7 mph with his fastball and firing 39 of 53 pitches for strikes. A cautious recovery from Tommy John surgery cost deGrom most of the season, but in three September outings he delivered a 1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 14:1 K:BB over 10.2 innings, suggesting he still has plenty left in the tank. He still has three years and $115 million left on his contract, plus a $20 million club option for 2028, so if he's healthy deGrom should play a big role in the Rangers' rotation plans for next season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Fans five over three frames

DeGrom did not factor into the decision in Friday's 8-2 loss against Seattle, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over three innings. He struck out five. The two-time Cy Young winner fired 58 pitches as he continues to build up after missing most of the year while recovering from Tommy John surgery. DeGrom looked terrific once again, as he averaged 97.6 mph on his fastball and generated nine whiffs in total. The only blemish on his evening came via a Josh Rojas solo shot in the third inning, the first run deGrom has allowed over 6.2 total innings this season. The Texas right-hander is currently scheduled to make his last start, which should once again have a workload restriction, on the road against the Angels next week.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Delivers scoreless line in return

DeGrom (elbow) allowed four hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 3.2 scoreless innings Friday while taking a no-decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners. In his first big-league outing since April 28, 2023 and after completing four minor-league rehab starts prior to being activated from the 60-day injured list, deGrom was limited to 61 pitches (41 strikes) in his return to the Texas rotation. Though he was generally sharp during his time on the mound, deGrom is likely to remain on a workload restriction for his next start, which is expected to come next week at home versus the Blue Jays.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Returning Friday

DeGrom (elbow) will start Friday's game against the Mariners, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom has been on the injured list all season while working his way back from a Tommy John procedure he underwent last June. Now that he's made four rehab appearances in the minors, during which he allowed just one earned run across 10.2 innings while striking out 15 batters, he's been given the green light to make his season debut and help out the Rangers' rotation for the final several weeks of the season. Although the four-time All-Star hasn't pitched since April 2023, his minor-league performance and favorable matchup against a weak Mariners offense suggest that he'll pick up right where he left off during his first start back in the majors.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Looks ready to return from IL

DeGrom (elbow) allowed one hit and struck out five over four scoreless innings in a rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Saturday. DeGrom made his fourth rehab start, and the four innings were the most he's thrown. The right-hander, who was scheduled to throw 60 pitches, was too efficient, dispatching the opposition on just 49 throws. The Rangers plan to have deGrom return from the 60-day injured list to make his season debut in the majors at some point during Texas' road trip to Arizona and Seattle that begins Tuesday and runs through next Sunday.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Rehab outing confirmed

DeGrom (elbow) will make his next start at Double-A Frisco on Saturday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. The Rangers had floated the idea of having deGrom pitch with the big-league club Saturday, but it has now been confirmed that he'll make one more rehab outing. He has yet to complete more than 2.2 innings with Frisco, so the team will likely look to stretch him out a bit more in his final start before activation.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: One more rehab start likely

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that deGrom (elbow) is likely to make one more rehab start, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. While Bochy confirmed the team has weighed the option of having deGrom start for the Rangers instead of Double-A Frisco on Saturday, he added that "I don't think that's what we're going to do." DeGrom would be slated to go four innings with Frisco on Saturday, setting him up for his season debut with the Rangers the following weekend in Seattle.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Could make season debut Saturday

DeGrom (elbow) could make his season debut Saturday against the Angels, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. DeGrom had been scheduled for one more rehab start with Double-A Frisco, but now the Rangers are considering having him start for them that day instead. If his outing is at Frisco, he will go four innings. If it's with the major-league club, he would be scheduled for just three frames. DeGrom has been excellent in his first three rehab starts, allowing one run on just three hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 6.2 innings. The 36-year-old is coming back from a second Tommy John surgery.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Makes third rehab start

DeGrom allowed one and one walk while striking out five over 2.2 scoreless innings for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday. DeGrom made the third start on his rehab assignment and is expected to make at least one more Saturday at Double-A Frisco. The right-hander has allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 6.2 innings during his rehab stint. Conceivably, deGrom could rejoin the Rangers' rotation at some point during next week's road trip that runs through Arizona and Seattle from Sept. 10-15.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Requires two more starts

DeGrom (elbow) will require two more rehab starts, with the first coming at Triple-A Round Rock, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. DeGrom has already completed a pair of rehab outings, allowing one run across four innings, and he'll need two more appearances before possibly being activated. The 35-year-old hasn't pitched for the Rangers since he underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2023 but should be back in mid-September.
