Reds' Steve Selsky: Inks minor-league deal with Reds
Selsky signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Monday, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports.
Selsky will serve as organizational depth for the Reds in 2018. He broke camp with the Red Sox in 2017, though he wound up making just eight appearances (going 1-for-9 with five strikeouts) before being sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he finished out the season hitting .215/.270/.360 across 79 games.

Steve Selsky: Released by Boston
Selsky was released by the Red Sox on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
Selsky was assigned to minor-league camp in March and mostly spent 2017 at Triple-A Pawtucket, though he made eight appearances with Boston. The 28-year-old will look to catch on as depth for another organization.

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: Assigned to minors camp
The Red Sox reassigned Selsky to their minor-league camp Sunday.
Selsky made eight appearances with the big club in 2017 but otherwise spent most of the campaign at Triple-A Pawtucket, where he slashed .215/.270/.360 across 322 plate appearances. An assignment back to Pawtucket presumably awaits Selsky again, with any promotion the 28-year-old might receive to the majors likely coming as a result of his dependable glove rather than because of anything he offers at the dish.

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: Signs minor-league deal with Red Sox
Selsky will be returning to the Red Sox on a minor-league deal, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports.
Selsky has appeared in 32 major-league games over the past two years with Cincinnati and Boston, recording a .283/.303/.376 batting line with two home runs. He hit just .215/.270/.360 in 79 games for Triple-A Pawtucket last year. He's unlikely to be anything other than organizational depth for the Red Sox.

While there is no corresponding move, Rosenthal suspects the Red Sox are on the verge of a trade. Selsky is hitting .215/.270/.360 with 11 home runs in 79 games at Triple-A. He will continue to provide organizational depth going forward, whether with the Red Sox or with a team that claims him.

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: Optioned to Triple-A
Selsky was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
With Chase d'Arnaud being claimed Thursday, the Red Sox had to make a 25-man roster move to clear a spot. Selsky had appeared in just three games since April 16 and hadn't made a start since April 9 even with Boston's rash of infield injuries. He'll head down to Pawtucket, where he figures to see much more regular playing time.

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: Starting in center field Sunday
Selsky is starting in center field Sunday in place of Jackie Bradley (knee), Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com reports.
Normally, we'd see Chris Young as a replacement outfielder, but he's needed at designated hitter to replace Hanley Ramirez (flu).

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: Earns 25th roster spot
Selsky will open the season on Boston's 25-man roster. manager John Farrell announced Saturday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Selsky's right-handed bat was the factor in him earning the 25th spot on the roster over Marco Hernandez. The 27-year-old Selsky is the right-handed alternative to Mitch Moreland at first base while the Red Sox wait on Hanley Ramirez, who has been limited to DH-only duty during spring training. Selsky was also used some at third base this spring and could be a complement to Pablo Sandoval, although his lack of experience at the hot corner was evident when he did play there. He went 16-for-45 (.356) with a .431 on-base percentage, .689 slugging percentage, with four home runs, three doubles, 12 RBI, 10 runs and five walks over 22 Grapefruit League games. Presumably, he's holding the final roster spot until Josh Rutledge (hamstring, 10-day DL) is ready. Or, Hernandez could replace him once Ramirez proves he's ready to play the field. The point being, Selsky's stay at the major-league level is expected to be a short one.

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: May return to majors
Selsky, who was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket earlier this week, is a candidate to make Boston's roster as the 25th man, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Marco Hernandez is also in the mix.
Josh Rutledge appeared to have the edge for the final roster spot, being a right-handed hitting utility infielder that could complement Pablo Sandoval at third base or Mitch Moreland at first while Hanley Ramirez is unable to play the field early in the season. But Rutledge suffered a hamstring injury Tuesday and will start the season on the 10-day disabled list. Enter Selsky, a right-handed batter who can play first base and has done some work at third this spring. He probably has the edge over the lefty-hitting Hernandez, though Hernandez has more third base experience and, as someone that hits both lefties and righties well, could complement Sandoval.

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: Sent to Triple-A
Selsky was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports.
Claimed off waivers in the offseason, Selsky made a strong push to secure a bench spot in camp. The 27-year-old was slashing .356/.431/.689 with four homers and 12 RBI through 45 at-bats before being sent down. He could eventually see a call-up if his bat stays hot.

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: Will get work at third base
Selsky, who has played outfield and first base during his career, will get some playing time at third base, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
If Selsky makes the transition to third, as a right-handed hitter, he's ideal as a potential platoon partner for Pablo Sandoval, though the Red Sox aren't thinking about a platoon at this time. Manager John Farrell is looking to increase his options at third base. Brock Holt, Marco Hernandez, Josh Rutledge and Deven Marrero all are capable of playing there. Somewhere in this grouping of players, Farrell will choose a utility infielder and a super-utility guy capable of playing outfield.

Red Sox's Steve Selsky: Claimed off waivers by Red Sox
Selsky was claimed off waivers and added to the Red Sox's 40-man roster Wednesday, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.
The 27-year-old spent the majority of 2016 at Triple-A, where he batted .283/.369/.425 in 191 games. He also saw some time in the majors, making his big league debut and slashing .314/.340/.471 in 54 plate appearances. He will provide organizational depth and add another right-handed bench option.

Reds' Steve Selsky: DFA'd by Reds
Selsky was designated for assignment Thursday, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
The 27-year-old pieced together an .822 OPS during a solid campaign with Triple-A Louisville, but he struggled mightily in the majors outside of one 5-for-5 anomaly in September. The move to boot him from the 40-man roster was initiated in order to make room for recently-acquired Luis Castillo and Austin Brice, so it seems that Selsky is seen as little more than an organizational depth piece in the Reds' eyes.

Reds' Steve Selsky: Homers in five-hit game against St. Louis
Selsky homered, drove in four and scored twice in a 5-for-5 game Monday against the Cardinals.
Selsky had just nine major league hits in 18 games entering Monday. The 27-year-old 33rd-round pick had himself a night he'll never forget. Unfortunately, he has struck out an absurd 15 times in just 39 plate appearances (38.4 percent). He hit .280/.363/.459 in 85 games for Cincinnati's Triple-A squad this year, but his power has been inconsistent in the minors. He'll need to show he can put the ball over the fence consistently if he wants a sustained chance at a major league role in the future.
