  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Likely done for 2024

Murphy (knee) has yet to resume catching and isn't expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list before the season ends Sept. 29, Evan Webeck of the East Bay Times reports. Murphy has resided on the IL since May 5 with a sprained MCL in his left knee. Though he avoided surgery and was expected to make a full recovery from the injury in six weeks, Murphy has been a slow healer, with the knee injury still presenting too much pain for him to resume squatting behind the plate. The knee sprain hasn't kept him from hitting, throwing and running, but the Giants aren't keen on activating the 33-year-old if he's available only as a designated hitter or pinch-hitting option. Murphy said that he expects to be ready to resume catching in spring training after getting a full offseason of recovery.

  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Begins hitting, running

Giants manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that Murphy (knee) has begun a hitting and running progression and could be an option to return from the 60-day injured list in September, MLB.com reports. Murphy has been on the shelf since May 5 with a left knee injury that was categorized as between a Grade 1 and Grade 2 sprain. The backstop hasn't recovered from the injury as quickly as anticipated, but he seems to be responding better after visiting Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles in late July and receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection for the knee. The Giants likely won't be able to pinpoint a more precise target date for Murphy's return until he's cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Catching live bullpen Saturday

Murphy (knee) will catch a live bullpen session Saturday in San Francisco, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Murphy will likely be joined by right-hander Keaton Winn (elbow) for Saturday's session. Murphy was transferred to the 60-day injured list May 15 due to a sprained left knee, and it took a month before the 33-year-old catcher could resume baseball activities. Saturday's session is another step in Murphy's rehab program, and he could return to the Giants before the All-Star break barring any setbacks. He appeared in 13 games prior to his injury, going 4-for-34 with one home run and two RBI.

  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Resumes baseball activities

Murphy (knee) has been taking batting practice and throwing out to 110 feet as of last week, MLB.com reports. Murphy was seemingly cleared to resume baseball activities earlier this month, but he likely still has a few checkpoints to hit in his recovery from a left knee sprain before the Giants clear him to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 33-year-old backstop is currently on the 60-day injured list and won't be eligible for activation until the first week of July.

The Giants transferred Murphy (knee) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Murphy was given a 4-to-6-week recovery timeline when he landed on the injured list May 5 due to a sprained left knee. However, his move to the 60-day IL will make him ineligible to return until July 4. The Giants signed Curt Casali on Wednesday to fill Murphy's spot on the 40-man roster and provide emergency catcher depth with Patrick Bailey (concussion) also out.

Giants manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Murphy is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks after being diagnosed with a left knee sprain, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Murphy suffered the injury during Saturday's game versus the Phillies and landed on the 10-day injured list Sunday. With Patrick Bailey (concussion) on the 7-day IL at least for the next few days, the Giants are down to Blake Sabol and Jakson Reetz as their catching duo.

  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Getting MRI on knee Sunday

Murphy (knee) will undergo an MRI on Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Murphy said he felt a pop in his left knee while trying to block a wild pitch in Saturday's loss to the Phillies. It's an injury that forced him from the game and Murphy admitted after the contest that his concern level is high. With Patrick Bailey (concussion) also sidelined, the Giants are down to one healthy catcher on their 40-man roster in Blake Sabol.

  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Evaluated for left knee injury

Murphy is being evaluated for a left knee injury after exiting Saturday's game versus the Phillies, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Murphy tweaked the knee as he tracked down a wild pitch in the second inning in rainy conditions in Philadelphia. He's the second Giants catcher to go down in a day's time, as Patrick Bailey was just placed on the 7-day concussion injured list, though the extent of Murphy's injury remains uncertain. Blake Sabol took over for Murphy on Saturday.

  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Exits with apparent knee injury

Murphy was removed from Saturday's game versus the Phillies in the second inning with an apparent knee injury, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Murphy seemed to tweak his knee as he chased down a wild pitch. The Giants already put Patrick Bailey on the 7-day concussion injured list earlier Saturday and may now have lost another catcher. Blake Sabol, who was recalled to replace Bailey on the roster, took over behind the dish for Murphy on Saturday.

  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Fills in for resting Patrick Bailey

Murphy will start at catcher and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Though he was able to beat out Joey Bart for the Giants' No. 2 catcher job before Bart was dealt to Pittsburgh earlier this month, Murphy has seen limited action behind No. 1 backstop Patrick Bailey. With Bailey getting a breather in the day game after a night game, Murphy will draw his fourth start through the Giants' first 13 games.

  • Giants' Tom Murphy: Heads to San Francisco

Murphy agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract with the Giants on Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Murphy has struggled to stay healthy over the last two seasons, appearing in only 61 total games during this stretch with Seattle. He'll look for a fresh start in San Francisco, where he's in line to serve as the backup catcher behind Patrick Bailey. The righty-hitting Murphy has a career .292/.361/.508 slash line against lefties and will likely be in the lineup whenever the Giants face a southpaw.

  • Mariners' Tom Murphy: Set for imaging Friday

Murphy is slated to have imaging performed on his injured thumb Friday in order to determine whether he's ready to return to baseball activities, the team's official site reports. Murphy suffered a thumb sprain in mid-August but subsequently suffered a small fracture in the thumb in early September, and he's been shut down altogether since Sept. 11. Friday's evaluation should give the Mariners a clearer picture of whether he'll return before the end of the regular season. Murphy's been a key contributor in 2023 with an .873 OPS across 158 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Tom Murphy: Nursing small fracture in thumb

Murphy has been diagnosed with a small fracture in his left thumb and has been shut down for the last 10 days. He'll be re-evaluated Sept. 22, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Murphy was initially placed on the 10-day injured list Aug. 16 due to a thumb sprain, and this setback will cost him additional time. Despite this bad news, the team is still optimistic that Murphy could return to play before the regular season comes to a close if he gains clearance Sept. 22 and can ramp up activities without suffering any setbacks, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times.

  • Mariners' Tom Murphy: Remains hot Saturday

Murphy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Murphy plated the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and later hit a solo shot to left field for Seattle's final tally of the contest. The backstop has opened the second half of the season on a strong note, batting .308 (8-for-26) with three homers and six RBI over eight games. That's helped him see more playing time of late, though Cal Raleigh -- who started at DH on Saturday -- remains the team's first option behind the plate.

  • Mariners' Tom Murphy: Plates pair in Friday's win

Murphy went 2-for-4 with a two-run double in a win over the Diamondbacks on Friday. Murphy capped off the Mariners' big four-run first inning with his timely two-bagger that plated Teoscar Hernandez and Cal Raleigh. The veteran backstop seems to do nothing but produce whenever he's given an opportunity, and he's now hitting .304 with three doubles, two home runs, four RBI, a hit-by-pitch and five runs in the seven games he's played since the All-Star break.

  • Mariners' Tom Murphy: Swats seventh homer

Murphy went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in an extra-inning loss to the Twins on Monday. The game was scoreless through four frames before Murphy put the Mariners on the board with a 421-foot solo shot to center field in the fifth. It was his seventh homer of the season, six of which have come over his past 14 contests. Murphy has been red-hot over that span, batting .372 (16-for-43) with nine extra-base hits. While he's still behind Cal Raleigh on the depth chart, the productive stretch has earned Murphy more playing time.

  • Mariners' Tom Murphy: Goes yard in loss

Murphy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Twins. Murphy got the Mariners on the board with his sixth-inning blast off Kenta Maeda. While his playing time remains sparse, Murphy has taken advantages of his opportunities by going 5-for-15 (.333) with two homers in July. The backup catcher is batting .275 with six long balls, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored and nine doubles over 112 plate appearances this season.

  • Mariners' Tom Murphy: On base four times in win

Murphy went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in a win over the White Sox on Sunday. Murphy continued to reward manager Scott Servais for affording him one of his occasional starts, slugging his fifth homer of the season in the sixth inning and serving as a thorn in the side of Rays pitching throughout the afternoon. The 32-year-old has pushed his season slash line to a stellar .281/.337/.551 across 98 plate appearances, with the latter figure largely the byproduct of Murphy lacing 14 of his 25 hits for extra bases. Murphy has notably drawn starts in three of his last four games -- the first time that's happened all season -- and the combination of his hot bat and ability to fill in at both designated hitter and catcher could afford him similarly frequent playing time moving forward.
