Player Outlook
Sean Manaea was good for his first 20 starts last season, putting up a 3.74 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 101:45 K:BB over 106 innings. Then, after watching a Chris Sale start and deciding he'd try to emulate Sale's lower arm slot, Manaea really took off over his final 12 outings, collecting a 3.09 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 83:18 K:BB across 75.2 frames. The new arm slot allowed Manaea's sinker to play better at the top of the zone, and he also found the strike zone more consistently, cutting his walk rate from 10.1 percent to 6.2 percent. A pitcher elevating his ceiling rarely happens in their 30s, but when it does it's usually because of a tangible change like Manaea made. It will cost fantasy managers more in 2025 to find out whether he can carry over his late-season success. There's also no change of scenery to consider since he re-signed with the Mets on a three-year, $75 million deal.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Goes on injured list

The Mets placed Manaea (oblique) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Manaea injured his oblique in late February and began a throwing progression in mid-March. The Mets haven't provided an official timetable for his return, but he could be ready to make his season debut by late April.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Begins throwing progression

Manaea was cleared to play catch earlier this week after an MRI on his right oblique was negative, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. With his oblique strain healed, the left-hander has begun his throwing progression. Manaea will need several weeks to get fully stretched out, but he could be ready to make his season debut sometime in April.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Bound for IL with oblique strain

Manaea has been diagnosed with a right oblique strain and is expected to begin the season on the 15-day injured list, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Manaea will be shut down for a couple weeks before being re-evaluated, but even in a best-case scenario he will not have time to be built back up for Opening Day. It's another blow to the Mets' starting pitching depth after it was revealed last week that Frankie Montas has a right lat strain. The club has been planning to deploy a six-man rotation early in the season, but it might now have to rethink that strategy.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Returning to Queens

Manaea agreed to a three-year, $75 million contract with the Mets on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. After posting a 4.73 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 67 appearances (38 starts) between the Padres and Giants during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, Manaea bounced back during his first season with the Mets last year, generating a 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 184:63 K:BB while pitching a career-high 181.2 innings across 32 regular-season starts. He'll return to the Mets and be part of a pitching staff that has already added Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes during the offseason. Manaea will be a front-end starter for a team that reached the NLCS in 2024 and enters the 2025 season with lofty aspirations after signing Juan Soto to a record-breaking deal in early December.

  • Sean Manaea: Rejects qualifying offer

Manaea rejected the Mets' one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer Monday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports. It was expected, as Manaea is in line to land a multi-year contract this offseason. That deal could come from the Mets, as the two sides are interested in a reunion. If Manaea signs elsewhere, the Mets will receive a draft pick. The left-hander collected a 3.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 181.2 regular-season innings in 2024.

  • Sean Manaea: Gets $21.05M qualifying offer

The Mets extended Manaea a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Manaea is likely to net a lucrative, multi-year contract this offseason, and if that agreement is with another team, the Mets will recoup a draft pick. The left-hander posted a 3.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 181.2 regular-season innings in 2024.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Will decline player option

Manaea is expected to decline his $13.5 million player option for 2025, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Manaea posted a 3.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 181.2 innings in 2024 -- all of which represent career-best marks for a full season. The 32-year-old southpaw will now look to capitalize on his strong campaign and likely pursue a multi-year deal in free agency.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Starting Game 2 of NLCS

Manaea will start Game 2 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Manaea hasn't pitched since Tuesday, so it's hardly a surprise for him to start on what will be five days of rest. The 32-year-old southpaw has given up three earned runs through 12 innings during the postseason and will be following Kodai Senga in the rotation.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Will start Game 3 of NLDS

Manaea was announced Sunday as the Mets' starter for Game 3 of the NLDS versus the Phillies on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The announcement comes as no surprise, as Manaea will be on five days' rest after starting Game 2 of the wild-card series this past Wednesday against Milwaukee. In that contest, the left-hander yielded two runs over five innings and came away with a no-decision. In three starts versus Philadelphia during the regular season, Manaea posted a 5.40 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB over 16.2 frames.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Tapped for Game 2 start

Manaea will start Wednesday in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Brewers, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Manaea was knocked around in Milwaukee in his final start of the regular season, but it's no surprise he's getting the nod for Game 2 based on his 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 184:63 K:BB across 181.2 innings this season. Jose Quintana is a likely bet to start Game 3, if necessary, although Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is holding off naming a starter for that contest for now.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Shelled in Milwaukee

Manaea (12-6) took the loss Friday against the Brewers, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out just one. The 32-year-old's run of brilliance came to an end, as he had pitched to a 2.91 ERA over 65 innings across his previous 10 starts. This marks the first time Manaea has allowed five or more earned runs since his first start of the second half against Miami on July 19. Things unraveled quickly for the Mets southpaw, as Rhys Hoskins launched a grand slam to left field in the opening frame. Manaea concludes a solid regular season, pitching to a 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 184:63 K:BB across 181.2 innings. He likely will enter free agency this offseason as the two-year deal he signed with the Mets this past January includes an opt-out clause.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Likely to pitch Friday

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said there's a "good chance" Manaea pitches Friday against Milwaukee after Wednesday's and Thursday's games against Atlanta were postponed due to inclement weather, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The left-hander was scheduled to start Thursday's contest, and it's hardly a surprise the Mets are hoping to get him on the mound as soon as possible in preparation for the wild-card round next week. Manaea has a 3.29 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 183:61 K:BB over 178 innings through 31 starts this season.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Notches 12th win

Manaea (12-5) picked up the win in Saturday's 6-3 victory over the Phillies, giving up three runs on three hits over seven innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. Solo shots by Kyle Schwarber to lead off the game and Nick Castellanos in the fifth inning accounted for most of the damage off Manaea, but he was otherwise locked in as he won his fourth straight decision. The quality start was the southpaw's third straight and seventh in his last eight outings, a stretch in which he's posted a 2.95 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 58:10 K:BB through 55 innings. Manaea is scheduled to make his final start of the regular season on the road next week against Atlanta -- the team closest to the Mets in the race for the final wild-card spot in the NL.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Settles for no-decision

Manaea came away with a no-decision in Monday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out six. The veteran lefty was impressive once again as he delivered his sixth quality start in his last seven trips to the mound, but Manaea was actually in line for the loss until the Mets finally got on the board in the eighth inning. Over his last 10 outings, Manaea has posted a dazzling 2.49 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 76:16 K:BB through 65 innings, but he's had to settle for a no-decision in three straight starts. He'll try to get back in the win column in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Phillies.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Fans nine in no-decision

Manaea did not factor into the decision in Friday's 6-4 victory over the Reds, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out nine. The New York southpaw looked untouchable for most of this outing, generating a fantastic 19 whiffs to pick up his nine Ks. However, Manaea was done in by a pair of two-run homers, one from Elly De La Cruz in the fourth inning before a TJ Friedl blast chased the hurler from the mound in the seventh. The 32-year-old Manaea has been brilliant over his last eight starts, going 5-1 with a 2.81 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 62:11 K:BB across 51.1 innings. He currently forecasts to face the Blue Jays on the road for his next start.

He's now posted quality starts in five of his last six appearances and owns a 3.51 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 149:52 K:BB in 143.2 innings overall this season. Manaea lines up to take the mound again versus the White Sox this weekend.

Manaea (8-5) took the loss against the Mariners on Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and five walks over three innings while striking out three. All three runs charged to Manaea came across in the opening frame when the right-hander surrendered hits to four of the first six batters he faced, including three doubles, while also allowing a runner to advance on a wild pitch. He would manage to get through the next two innings unscathed but was relieved by Huascar Brazoban to open the fourth after throwing 85 pitches through three innings. It marked the shortest outing of the season for Manaea after hurling 14 scoreless frames over his previous two starts, while the five walks on the night matched his season high.
