Marcus Walden: Catches on with Cubs
Walden signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Thursday.
Less than two weeks after being released by the Red Sox, Walden found a home in a new organization. The 32-year-old right-hander made 93 big-league appearances out of Boston's bullpen between 2018 and 2020, but he was unable to earn a promotion to the majors in 2021 after compiling a 4.22 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 42.2 innings at Triple-A Worcester prior to being granted his release.

Marcus Walden: Let go by Boston
The Red Sox released Walden on Saturday.
After being outrighted off Boston's 40-man roster in March, Walden pitched exclusively at Triple-A Worcester this season, logging a 4.43 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 40.2 innings. Set to turn 33 years old in September, Walden isn't any sort of developmental piece for the Red Sox, so the organization elected to move on from him to open up a roster spot at Worcester for a younger player.

Red Sox's Marcus Walden: Outrighted to Triple-A
The Red Sox outrighted Walden to Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Walden remains in the organization after going unclaimed off waivers when he was designated for assignment last week. The right-hander will continue to compete for a bullpen role with the Red Sox this spring, but his lack of a 40-man roster spot will likely work against him.

Red Sox's Marcus Walden: Picks up first save
Walden recorded the final two outs of a 5-2 win over the Phillies to notch his first save of the season in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
After Matt Barnes blew the save in the matinee, Boston manager Ron Roenicke elected not to bring his closer back out to protect another lead in the nightcap. Instead, Austin Brice began the seventh inning but walked two batters while getting only one out, giving Walden the opportunity to shut the door on the Phillies. The 31-year-old likely won't be a regular part of the saves picture even if Barnes loses his job, however. On the season, Walden has a 9.53 ERA and 8:9 K:BB through 11.1 innings.

Red Sox's Marcus Walden: Projected for bullpen
Walden is expected to be a member of the bullpen when the regular season begins, Chris Cotillo of MLB.com reports.
Walden was a workhorse reliever in 2019, throwing a bullpen-high 78 innings over 70 appearances. The right-hander posted a 3.81 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, but he ran into trouble with walks (3.7 BB/9). Walden worked around that by inducing frequent groundballs that turned into outs. He should resume his role as a trusted member of the late-inning relief corps.

Red Sox's Marcus Walden: Notches one-out save
Walden earned the save Tuesday versus the Rays by recording one out and issuing one walk. He did not record a strikeout.
Walden entered in a tough spot with the bases loaded and made matters worse by issuing a four-pitch walk to shrink the lead to one run, but he then induced a groundout to finish the contest. Matt Barnes and Brandon Workman already pitched in the contest, providing Walden the chance to close things out. The 30-year-old has a 3.55 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 54:16 K:BB through 50.2 innings.

Red Sox's Marcus Walden: Runs into eighth-inning trouble
Walden allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in one-third of an inning in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Indians.
Walden, who picked up a save in his previous appearance, left a mess in the eighth inning that Matt Barnes had to clean up. Boston scored a pair of its own in the bottom of the eighth and had a three-run lead when it entered the ninth, but Ryan Brasier promptly gave it all away. Walden had earned high-leverage work after a stretch of 22.1 innings during which he allowed just two runs. Boston's closer situation has been unpredictable all season and should remain as such in the eyes of fantasy owners going forward.

Red Sox's Marcus Walden: Notches first save
Walden earned the save by striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning Sunday against the Astros.
Walden entered the ballgame in the ninth frame with a three-run lead, and he slammed the door without issue. He needed just nine pitches (eight strikes) to get the job done. Walden was a surprising choice for a save situation, though after Matt Barnes was hit with the loss Saturday night, skipper Alex Cora showed that he has confidence in Walden in high-leverage situations.
