Buchanan's stay on the Reds' 40-man roster lasted just one day, as Cincinnati called him from Triple-A Louisville to serve as a bulk reliever in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Brewers. After relievers Fernando Cruz and Buck Farmer covered the first three innings, Buchanan entered for the next 3.1 innings, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out one. If Buchanan isn't claimed off waivers, he'll likely stick around in the Cincinnati organization and report back to Louisville.

The Reds' pitching plans were not officially announced before the contest, and this amounted to a bullpen game for the team. Buchanan logged the most innings of any of the five pitchers the team deployed, and he threw 33 of 58 pitches for strikes in his first big-league outing since 2015. He maintained a 4.91 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over 102.2 innings with Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year before he was traded to the Reds on Tuesday. Buchanan started 16 of his 22 appearances at Triple-A, and there could be room for him to make a spot start or another long-relief appearance while Cincinnati's rotation is shorthanded. If he gets another outing, he'd be on schedule to pitch in next weekend's series against the Mets at Citi Field.

Buchanan signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Tuesday that includes an invite to major-league spring training.
Buchanan had a 5.01 ERA in 35 starts for the Phillies between 2014 and 2015, but he's spent the past number of years playing overseas in Japan and Korea. The 34-year-old righty started 30 games for the Samsung Lions of the KBO last season and had a 2.54 ERA and 139:43 K:BB across 188 innings.
