Pagan recorded his 20th save of the season in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Padres, giving up one run on one hit and striking out one in the ninth inning.
Fernando Tatis took him deep, marking the second straight appearance in which Pagan served up a homer, but the veteran reliever still closed the door to reach the 20-save plateau for the second straight season and the third time in his career. Pagan hasn't blown a save chance since returning at the beginning of July from a hamstring strain, converting 14 straight opportunities while posting a 2.66 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 24:3 K:BB over 20.1 innings.

Manager Terry Francona opted for southpaw Brock Burke instead of Pagan to close out the game, after the veteran righty had thrown 19 pitches the night before. The top of the ninth turned into a nightmare, as an error on a routine flyball, along with three walks and a HBP from Burke, lead to six unearned runs for the Cardinals. If Pagan is currently unable to pitch on back-to-back days, it could open up save opportunities for other Cincinnati relievers, but Burke's usage Thursday may also have simply been matchup-based -- top right-handed setup man Pierce Johnson, who hasn't pitched since Monday, went completely unused in the contest.

Pagan needed every bit of the three-run lead he was afforded, serving up a two-run home run to Jordan Walker. With Pagan unavailable, Julian Garcia gave up a run but hung on to notch his second career save. Francona noted that Pagan "really wanted to pitch," but the manager exercised caution and held him out. Pagan will be examined Friday when the Reds return home, and more will be known after that regarding his availability for this weekend's series against the Marlins. This was Pagan's second save in five outings since he returned from a hamstring injury. He's allowed two runs while posting an 8:2 K:BB over 4.1 innings in that span. The right-hander is at a 5.89 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB with eight saves in 11 chances over 18.1 innings this season. Pagan is still the Reds' top closing option due to the absences of Tony Santillan (oblique) and Graham Ashcraft (elbow), but the team's last-place status makes it tough to expect many saves.
Pagan earned the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Orioles, allowing a run on a hit and two walks in the ninth inning. He struck out one.
It didn't come easy for Pagan in his first save chance since returning from a nearly two-month stint on the IL. The Orioles loaded the bases with one out before adding a run on a sacrifice fly. Pagan then coaxed a lineout off the bat of Adley Rutschman, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base and locking down his seventh save of the year. It's been an uneven season for Pagan thus far -- he now sports a 6.46 ERA with a 1.50 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB across 15.1 innings. The Reds reinstated Pagan (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday.
The right-hander is fully recovered from the left hamstring strain that sent him to the injured list in early May, and he's now back on the active roster after making two rehab appearances with Triple-A Louisville. Pagan had a slow start to the campaign with a 6.43 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB across 14 innings while going 6-for-9 in save chances prior to the injury, but he should still reclaim the closer role now that he's healthy.
