  • Marlins' Tyler Kolek: Makes return Thursday

Kolek got the start Thursday for the GCL Marlins, his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2016. The outing wasn't exactly a rousing success -- Kolek recorded only one out and was charged with four runs on a hit and two walks -- but the important thing is that he's pitching again. The 21-year-old right-hander was the second overall pick in 2014 and struggled with his control prior to surgery, so expect him to focus simply on building up some innings for the rest of the season rather than making any kind of rapid ascent up the ladder in the Marlins' system.

  • Marlins' Tyler Kolek: Opens year on DL

Kolek (elbow) opened the year on the 7-day DL at Low-A Greensboro, MLB.com's Mike Rosenbaum reports. He is nearly a year removed from Tommy John surgery, and is beginning the season in extended spring training before heading to Greensboro. Kolek was drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in 2014 as a big righty who could touch triple digits, but had a lot of developing to do as a pitcher, and he hasn't had much time to improve upon his weaknesses due to the elbow surgery.

  • Marlins' Tyler Kolek: Aiming for May return

Kolek is in the final stages of rehab from his Tommy John surgery, and is hoping to get back on the mound in May, The Miami Herald reports. Still only 21, the second overall pick in the 2014 draft has had a brutal start to his pro career, showing poor control and command in the low minors for two seasons before blowing out his elbow last spring. Kolek still rates as one of the top prospects in a talent-starved Marlins system, but in most dynasty leagues there's little reason to use a roster spot on him until he shows any kind of progress.

  • Marlins pitching prospect Tyler Kolek shows promise in Class A

Marlins pitching prospect Tyler Kolek, the second-overall pick in the 2014 draft, is showing promise as he maneuvers through the Class A ranks for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Kolek, who is rated as the Marlins' top prospect by MLB.com, has an impressive 3.67 ERA over his last six starts, despite having just a 1-4 record over that span to show for it. In his last 27 innings of work, Kolek has limited batters to a .248 average at the plate. Overall, Kolek has a 4-6 record this season with a 4.44 ERA and 49 strikeouts and 36 walks over 75 innings.
