Reds' Buck Farmer: Nabs save in season finale
Farmer picked up the save Sunday against the Cubs, walking one batter with no strikeouts across a scoreless 10th inning.
Farmer logged his first save of 2024, taking the mound in the 10th inning to close out the Reds' regular-season finale. He'll finish the campaign with a 3.04 ERA and a 70:29 K:BB across 71 innings.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Two scoreless frames as opener
Farmer did not factor into the decision in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Pirates, striking out two over two perfect innings.
Farmer was tasked with opening a bullpen game for the Reds after Andrew Abbott (shoulder) was placed on the injured list, and he retired all six batters he faced on 27 pitches. While the 33-year-old has not exceeded two innings in any outing this season, he owns an impressive 2.58 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 54:24 K:BB across 59.1 innings.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Opener for Friday
Farmer will serve as the Reds' opening pitcher for Friday's game against the Pirates, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Farmer is tabbed as the Reds' official starter, but he has completed no more than two innings in any appearance this season. That said, he'll almost certainly be in store for a brief outing, with lefty Andrew Abbott being the leading candidate to work in bulk relief behind him.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Mops up in loss
Farmer allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out one over 1.2 innings in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Phillies.
Farmer entered in the middle of the seventh inning after Brent Suter gave up a grand slam to Bryce Harper. Farmer was touched for a home run, too, a solo shot by Brandon Marsh. This was the reliever's second appearance, and he's allowed home runs in each.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Cedes first spring runs
Farmer allowed four runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two over one inning in Thursday's spring game against Texas.
Farmer cruised through his first five Cactus League outings -- no runs or walks allowed and five strikeouts over five innings -- before the Rangers hung a four-spot on him in the fourth inning, courtesy of a Wyatt Langford grand slam. Farmer is expected to return as an important piece of the bullpen for Cincinnati, working as a bridge to closer Alexis Diaz.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Retained by Reds
Farmer signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract with the Reds on Thursday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Farmer has provided the Reds with some solid middle relief work over the past two seasons, posting a 4.06 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 124:54 K:BB over 122 innings, collecting five saves along the way. Slated to turn 33 in February, Farmer will be counted on as a bridge to closer Alexis Diaz again in 2024.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Grabs relief win
Farmer (3-4) was credited with Monday's win over the Cubs. He struck out two over 1.2 hitless and scoreless innings.
Farmer replaced starter Andrew Abbott with one out in the fourth inning and retired all four batters faced, including a double play to escape the fourth. The outing was Farmer's 50th of the season, tying him for third most in majors along with fellow Cincinnati bullpen mates Ian Gibaut and Alexis Diaz. The right-handed Farmer endured a rough patch early in July but has righted himself with three runs allowed and 11 strikeouts over the last 9.1 innings.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Cedes two homers in loss
Farmer allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits over one inning in Saturday's 12-5 loss to San Diego.
Farmer allowed back-to-back homers to Juan Soto and Manny Machado, giving him six runs and three home runs allowed in the last two outings. Prior to that, Farmer had been effective out of the bullpen, posting a 2.56 ERA over his first 37 appearances, including 1.75 since May 3. Manager David Bell has had to lean on relievers during a stretch in which a thin rotation is not getting deep into games, and Farmer hasn't pitched a clean inning since June 7.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Picks up save Wednesday
Farmer earned a save against the Red Sox on Wednesday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning.
Closer Alexis Diaz pitched three of the previous four days, so the Reds turned to Farmer to protect a one-run lead in the ninth. The righty reliever threw just half of his 16 pitches for a strike but managed to retire the side in order for his first save of the campaign. Farmer has pitched well this season with a 2.60 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB over 27.2 innings, but Diaz has been dominant and is in no danger of losing his ninth-inning role.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Opening Day loss
Farmer picked up the loss on Opening Day to the Pirates, allowing a run on a walk in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie.
Farmer walked the leadoff hitter, allowed a stolen base, and that runner subsequently scored on a sacrifice fly. He'll likely get future opportunities to get games to Alexis Diaz in the ninth, despite failing to do so on Thursday.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Agrees to terms
Farmer signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Reds on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Farmer was a valuable reliever for the Reds in 2022, as he threw 47 innings while maintaining a 3.83 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. He was briefly sent to the minors after struggling in the first half but managed a 2.83 ERA across 35 frames from July 9 to the close of the campaign. Farmer will likely remain locked into a key role in the Cincinnati bullpen in 2023.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Better second half
Farmer finished the 2022 season with a 3.83 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, five holds and two saves over 47 innings, but he had a 2.83 ERA over 35 innings following his second call-up July 9, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Farmer will be eligible for his third season of arbitration this offseason, which means that the Reds -- who are in austerity mode -- have to decide whether to tender him a contract. Typically a team in that position will opt to go cheap in the bullpen. He projects to make somewhere between $1.4-$1.85 million should he get tendered a contract.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Earns save Sunday
Farmer didn't strike out a batter but pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save during Sunday's win over the Cardinals.
Farmer hasn't had many high-leverage looks out of Cincinnati's bullpen this season, and Sunday's save was just his second of the season and his first since July 31. Although he's worked mainly as a middle reliever, he's been a strong contributor for the Reds over the last month and a half, posting a 0.44 ERA in 20.2 innings over his last 20 appearances. Alexis Diaz has been the favorite for save chances in Cincinnati, but it's possible that Farmer earns a few more high-leverage opportunities down the stretch as long as he continues to limit run production.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Back from bereavement list
Farmer (personal) was reinstated from the bereavement list Saturday.
While his overall numbers leave a lot to be desired (4.67 ERA, 1.44 WHIP), Farmer has been scored upon in just one of his last 11 appearances out of the Cincinnati bullpen. He earned his first career save July 31 and will likely continue to see mid-to-high-leverage opportunities now that he's back on the active roster.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Placed on bereavement list
Farmer was placed on the bereavement list Wednesday.
Farmer has been effective over five appearances since the start of August, picking up a win and a hold while striking out seven in 5.2 scoreless innings. However, he'll spend between three and seven days away from the team after landing on the bereavement list. The move makes room on the active roster for Art Warren (elbow), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Reds' Buck Farmer: Tallies first career save
Farmer gave up one walk but did not surrender a hit in a scoreless ninth inning of work to earn the save in a 3-2 win over the Orioles on SUnday
Farmer was called upon to protect a precarious one-run lead after Brandon Drury hit a go-ahead pinch-hit home run. He shut the door on the Orioles to pick up his first career save. The 31-year-old veteran has pitched only 21 innings so far in 2022 and has a 5.49 ERA. Nevertheless, he finds himself thrust into a co-closer role in Cincinatti along with Alexis Diaz due to injuries to Tony Santillan (back) and Art Warren (right flexor pronator strain) while normal closer Hunter Strickland is on the bereavement list.

Farmer's contract was selected from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.
Farmer made 10 relief appearances for the Reds earlier in the year, and he posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 12 innings. The right-hander rejoined the Reds on a minor-league deal after being designated for assignment in May, and he'll be added to the major-league bullpen after Ross Detwiler (back) was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday.
