  • Pirates' Domingo Leyba: Inks minors deal with Pirates

Leyba signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Friday, John Dreker of Pirates Prospects reports. The 27-year-old utility infielder is already in Pirates camp. Leyba has some major-league experience but split 2022 between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso in the Padres organization, sporting a .755 OPS with 11 homers and 12 steals over 108 games. He'll likely begin 2023 at Triple-A Indianapolis.

  • Padres' Domingo Leyba: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Leyba was reassigned to minor-league spring training Thursday. Leyba served as a non-roster invitee this spring and went 4-for-14 with two runs, an RBI, a walk and three strikeouts across 10 Cactus League appearances. However, he'll report to Triple-A El Paso to begin the regular season.

  • Padres' Domingo Leyba: Signs minor-league contract

Leyba signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Dec. 14. Leyba spent time with the Diamondbacks, Orioles and Rangers last year but played at the Triple-A level for most of the season. It wouldn't be surprising to see the 26-year-old serve as a non-roster invitee this spring, but he'll likely serve as organizational depth for most of the 2022 campaign.

  • Rangers' Domingo Leyba: Signed by Rangers

Leyba signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Friday. The 25-year-old was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock. Leyba has appeared in 34 major-league games this season while slashing .115/.191/.161 but has fared much better in the minors.

  • Domingo Leyba: Released by Orioles

Leyba was released by the Orioles on Thursday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. Leyba was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk in early August, and he went 2-for-8 with a walk and a strikeout in three minor-league games since he rejoined the Tides. The 25-year-old will be free to seek out other opportunities following his release.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Loses roster spot

The Orioles designated Leyba for assignment Wednesday, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. Before Leyba was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday, the Orioles gave him a look as an everyday player in the middle infield. The 25-year-old switch-hitter didn't impress during his two-and-a-half-month stay in the majors, slashing .115/.198/.161 with a 24 percent strikeout rate over 96 plate appearances. If he goes unclaimed off waivers, Leyba will remain in the organization and continue to play for Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Not starting Friday

Leyba isn't starting Friday's game against the Tigers. Leyba had started each of the last four games, but he went 0-for-12 with a walk and four strikeouts. Pat Valaika will start at the keystone and bat ninth.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Picks up work at keystone

Leyba will start at second base and bat ninth Wednesday against the Marlins, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. He'll be manning the keystone for the third game in a row and appears to have temporarily moved ahead of the struggling Pat Valaika on the depth chart. Leyba has gone 0-for-5 over his previous two starts to drop his season average to .130, so he likely won't have a long leash in an everyday role.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Remains on bench

Leyba will sit Tuesday against the Rays, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. Leyba was in the starting lineup for nine straight games from June 27 through July 7, appearing against both righties and lefties, but it looks as though he's since slipped into a platoon role. Since that run ended, he's started against all four righties the Orioles have faced while sitting against all three lefties -- including Tuesday's starter for Tampa, Shane McClanahan. Pat Valaika starts at second base in his absence.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Gets breather Monday

Leyba isn't starting Monday's game against the Rays, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Leyba had started each of the last two games and went 1-for-7 with a double, a run, an RBI and a strikeout during that time. Pat Valaika will start at second base and bat eighth.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Emerging as primary second baseman

Leyba will start at second base and bat sixth Sunday against the Royals. Since being called up from Triple-A Norfolk on June 27, Leyba has seemingly usurped Pat Valaika as manager Brandon Hyde's preferred option at the keystone. Leyba will pick up his fourth start in five games Sunday, but he'll likely need to improve his production at the plate to ensure he sticks atop the depth chart. He's slashing an unimpressive .209/.292/.279 in 43 at-bats since his call-up.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Plates two in loss

Leyba went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a walk in Saturday's 8-3 loss to the White Sox. Leyba was one of Baltimore's most effective hitters in Saturday's loss. He delivered RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings to account for the team's first two runs. The infielder has piled up a home run, three RBI and five runs scored in 11 games since he was called up from Triple-A Norfolk. He'll likely continue to be in the mix for playing time at second and third base in competition with Pat Valaika and Kelvin Gutierrez.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Not starting Friday

Leyba is out of the lineup Friday against the White Sox, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Leyba went 4-for-16 with a homer, three walks and four runs while starting at third base over the past five games with Maikel Franco (ankle) sidelined. Kelvin Gutierrez will take over at the hot corner Friday.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Knocks solo home run

Leyba went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in Friday's 8-7 loss to the Angels. Leyba took Angels starter Griffin Canning deep in the second inning for his first major-league home run. The 25-year-old infielder has hit safely in four of his five games with Baltimore. While he started Friday at third base to cover for Maikel Franco (ankle), Leyba's best path to playing time remains as part of a timeshare with Pat Valaika at the keystone.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Recalled Sunday

Leyba was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday. Leyba's promotion comes in the midst of a flurry of roster moves, as Ryan McKenna and Ramon Urias also received the call from Norfolk while Freddy Galvis (quad) was placed on the IL. Leyba did not record a hit in 22 at-bats with Arizona earlier this year before being DFA'd and claimed by Baltimore in early June. He'll man second base and bat sixth during the series finale against Toronto.

  • Orioles' Domingo Leyba: Claimed by Orioles

Leyba was claimed off waivers by the Orioles on Friday and optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports. Leyba will get to remain on a 40-man roster after getting designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. While he won't get a big-league opportunity right away, Leyba could get the chance to carve out a role at second base in Baltimore, as the team lacks an established option at the position. Leyba owns a very poor .149/.241/.234 slash line through his first 54 major-league plate appearances, however, so it's far from guaranteed that he'll get meaningful at-bats for his new team.

  • Diamondbacks' Domingo Leyba: Designated for assignment

Leyba was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Leyba appeared in 13 games during his stint on the major-league roster, but he failed to record a hit and struck out seven times in 22 at-bats. His removal from the 40-man roster will clear space for Ildemaro Vargas, who was acquired by Arizona in a corresponding move.

  • Diamondbacks' Domingo Leyba: Contract selected by Arizona

Leyba had his contract selected by the Diamondbacks on Saturday. The 25-year-old was designated for assignment in November but will rejoin the 40-man roster while Arizona battles through a rash of injuries. Leyba went 7-for-25 with an .807 OPS in his first taste of big-league action during 2019, and he didn't see the field last year.

  • Diamondbacks' Domingo Leyba: Returns to roster

Leyba completed his suspension and was added to the active roster Monday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports. Leyba was issued an 80-game suspension in March after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, but he'll be eligible to return for the start of the 2021 season after missing the entirety of the 60-game 2020 campaign. The 25-year-old should compete for a utility role during spring training after making a nice first impression over a limited sample in the majors in 2019.

  • Diamondbacks' Domingo Leyba: Receives 80-game ban

Leyba received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Leyba was called up for his major-league debut in September and made a quality first impression with a .280/.367/.440 slash line in 21 games, and he had a chance to begin the season in a utility role for the Diamondbacks. The 24-year-old will instead miss the first half of the season.
