  • Aristides Aquino: Heading to Japan

Aquino signed a contract with the Chunichi Dragons of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan on Sunday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.

Aquino was designated for assignment by the Reds in mid-November and has opted to continue his professional career overseas. He had a .197/.246/.363 slash line with 10 home runs in 80 games during 2022, though he was one of the best defensive right fielders in MLB and accumulated 1.9 dWAR despite the limited playing time.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Designated for assignment

Aquino was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday.

Aquino struggled to get anything going last season, slashing .197/.246/.363 over 276 plate appearances. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, he will presumably return to Triple-A Louisville, where he had much more success at the plate (1.108 OPS).

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Closes season as bench player

Aquino is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

Even with another outfielder in TJ Friedl (hamstring) moving to the injured list Tuesday, Aquino will end up finishing the campaign as a reserve outfielder. Mike Siani will be flanked in the outfield by Stuart Fairchild and Jake Fraley in the season finale while Aquino sits for the fifth time in seven games. Over his last 15 games, Aquino has hit .167 with a 34.5 percent strikeout rate.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Reaches 10 homers

Aquino went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Pirates on Monday.

Aquino was the only Reds player with multiple hits in the contest, and his ninth-inning solo homer pushed him to 10 long balls for the second straight season. He's needed more plate appearances to reach that mark in 2022, and he's yet to replicate the success that saw him hit 19 homers over just 205 at-bats in his rookie 2019 campaign. Aquino has run hot and then cold this month -- he batted .327 over his first 14 games in September but is hitting a paltry .094 (3-for-32) in his past nine contests.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Gets nod in right field Tuesday

Aquino will start in right field and bat sixth in Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

He'll pick up his 16th consecutive start Tuesday after slashing .268/.317/.589 with four home runs in his previous 15 contests. Though he had initially served as a short-side platoon player in the Cincinnati outfield upon being activated from the injured list Aug. 2, Aquino's recent power production might be enough to solidify himself as a near-everyday player the rest of the way.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Continues strong September

Aquino went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a 3-2 win against St. Louis on Thursday.

Aquino belted a solo homer in the sixth inning, providing what ended up being the decisive run in the victory. The long ball was his ninth of the campaign, moving him within one homer of last season's total. After batting a paltry .185 through the end of August, Aquino has turned things around considerably in September, slashing .311/.367/.756 with five home runs, five doubles and 10 RBI over 13 contests. Perhaps most promisingly, he's struck out just 22.4 percent of the time, a vast improvement over his 36.7 percent strikeout rate on the season.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Launches two long balls Wednesday

Aquino went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three total RBI in Wednesday's 7-1 victory versus the Cubs.

Aquino put the Reds on the board with a 438-foot solo shot in the third inning, and he capped the scoring in the contest with another solo homer in the ninth. In between, he drove in Cincinnati's sixth run with a sixth-inning single. Aquino is still batting just .199 on the season, but he's swung a hot bat of late, going 8-for-16 with three homers, seven RBI and four runs over his past five games.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Crushes grand slam as pinch hitter

Aquino hit a grand slam in his lone at-bat in a 10-0 win over the Rockies in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Aquino provided the Reds' final runs of the contest in the sixth inning with his big hit after entering when Jonathan India (knee) left the contest. That was his only plate appearance across both games of Sunday's twin bill. He entered Sunday with just three singles across his last five games. The outfielder is slashing .185/.225/.306 with five homers, 22 RBI, 17 runs scored and two stolen bases through 182 plate appearances. The 28-year-old will likely pick up most of his playing time against left-handed pitchers.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: On bench for early game

Aquino is out of the lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Rockies.

Aquino will take a seat after starting in nine of the past 10 games while going 7-for-34 with two doubles, two walks, five RBI and two runs. TJ Friedl and Jake Fraley are expected to serve as the Reds' primary corner outfielders moving forward, but Aquino should be a fixture in the lineup against left-handed pitching and could mix into the starting nine as a designated hitter versus right-handed pitching, too.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Back on bench Monday

Aquino is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

With Nick Senzel (hamstring) drawing back into the lineup at designated hitter and with Stuart Fairchild being rewarded with another start in the outfield after homering in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Washington, Aquino will hit the bench following six consecutive starts. Assuming Senzel is ready to handle a regular role in the outfield in short order, Aquino's starting opportunities will likely come mainly against left-handed pitching moving forward. Left-handed hitters Jake Fraley and TJ Friedl should continue to play alongside Senzel in the outfield when the Reds oppose right-handers.

  • Reds' Aristides Aquino: Gets sixth straight start

Aquino will start in right field and bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Nationals.

Due to Nick Senzel (hamstring) missing his third straight contest in addition to the Reds facing a slew of left-handed starting pitchers, Aquino will stick in the lineup for a sixth consecutive game. Though he doubled twice and drove in five runs while starting the past five contests, the righty-hitting Aquino is expected to fill a short-side platoon role once Senzel is ready to return to the lineup.

Aquino is out of the lineup for Monday's game in Philadelphia.

The righty-hitting Aquino will be on the bench against a right-handed starting pitcher for the third time in four games. Aquino appears to have moved into the short side of a platoon in the corner outfield with the lefty-hitting TJ Friedl.
