Pirates' Domingo German: Cast away by Pirates again
The Pirates designated German for assignment Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
The move comes after German's poor outing Wednesday in which he allowed six earned runs on nine hits across three innings. He had allowed just two earned runs in his first 12.0 innings, but surrendered 16 earned runs in his last 8.2 innings. Pirates' Domingo German: Poor showing in start
German (0-1) allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out three over three innings to take the loss versus the Cubs on Wednesday.
German didn't pitch well, but it wouldn't have made much difference considering the Pirates couldn't muster a hit. He's given up 17 runs (16 earned) over his last 8.2 innings, a span that includes Wednesday's start and a pair of relief appearances. For the year, German has a 7.84 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 18:13 K:BB through 20.2 innings over seven appearances (two starts). The Pirates haven't revealed if he'll get a chance to stay in the rotation after this poor outing.

At least temporarily, the Pirates will expand the rotation to a six men, with the addition of German building in an additional day of rest between starts for rookies Paul Skenes and Jared Jones. German tossed six scoreless innings against the Rangers in his lone other start for the Pirates on Aug. 21, but he worked in long relief in his last two appearances, covering 5.2 innings while yielding 10 runs on 11 hits and five walks.

Pirates' Domingo German: Lit up in long relief
German surrendered eight earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three across 2.2 innings of relief in Monday's 18-8 loss to the Cubs.
After tossing six shutout innings in his first start with the Pirates last Wednesday against the Rangers, German headed back to the bullpen as Pittsburgh kicked off its three-game series with the Cubs. The Pirates likely weren't planning on German working extensively Tuesday, but he was needed in long relief after started Mitch Keller was lifted after tossing four innings and 97 pitches. After entering the game with the Pirates facing a 3-2 deficit, German turned in a 1-2-3 fifth inning, but he completed unraveled in the sixth, with the Cubs batting around the order and capping an eight-run frame with a two-out Dansby Swanson grand slam. German returned for the seventh inning and gave up two base hits and recorded two outs before giving way to Brady Feigl. Though he worked out of the bullpen Tuesday, German could get another look in a starting role in September if the Pirates decide to expand their rotation to six men to create additional days of rest between starts for rookie hurlers Paul Skenes and Jared Jones (lat).

However, with Jared Jones (lat) nearing a return, German figures to head back to a swingman role in Pittsburgh.

Pirates' Domingo German: Back with Pittsburgh
German re-signed Sunday with the Pirates on a minor-league contract, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
German had opted out of his minor-league deal with the Pirates last week, but after canvassing the open market, he's elected to rejoin the organization. His new contract contains an Aug. 9 opt-out clause, so he could choose to pursue free agency once again in three weeks if he's not promoted to the big leagues before then. Pirates' Domingo German: Makes season debut
German allowed one run while striking out four over four innings in his season debut Tuesday with Single-A Bradenton.

The Yankees outrighted German (personal) to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

"It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being," reads a statement from the Yankees. "We will respect his privacy as he begins this process." Nestor Cortes (shoulder) has cut short his minor-league rehab assignment and is presumably going to take over German's spot in the rotation beginning Saturday against the Astros. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said German will not return this season, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv.

Yankees' Domingo German: Enters in relief Monday
German (arm) threw five scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Rays. He gave up two hits and two walks and struck out four in a no-decision.
German was originally scheduled to start Monday, only for the Yankees to scratch him hours before the contest after manager Aaron Boone said the right-hander experienced discomfort in his armpit area Sunday. The Yankees planned to have him visit a doctor shortly before the game, and German was apparently given the green light to work out of the bullpen after starter Jhony Brito was lifted after giving up five runs in four innings. Based on how he fared in relief Monday, German looks to be fully healthy, so he should be ready to return to a traditional starting role when his next turn in the rotation comes up this weekend versus the Astros.
