  • Rays' Danny Jansen: Nets one-year deal with Tampa Bay

The Rays agreed to a one-year, $8.5 million contract with Jansen on Friday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Murray notes that Jansen turned down multi-year offers from other teams, preferring to bet on himself on a one-year pact after a down 2024 campaign which saw him put up a .658 OPS over 92 games between the Blue Jays and Red Sox. Injuries have been a problem for Jansen, whose career high in games (107) and plate appearances (384) was established back in 2019. However, he's been an above-average offensive catcher for most of his career, particularly from 2021-23 when he put up an .805 OPS.

  • Red Sox's Danny Jansen: Smacks ninth home run

Jansen went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Yankees. Jansen accounted for Boston's only run Thursday with a solo homer off Nestor Cortes in the fifth inning. It was his ninth home run of the season and third since joining the Red Sox late in July. Playing time has been hard to come by for Jansen, as he's played behind Connor Wong at catcher and has just 59 at-bats in the Boston's 45 games since the trade.

  • Red Sox's Danny Jansen: Set to make history

Jansen will be the catcher Monday when the continuation of a suspended game between the Red Sox and Blue Jays resumes, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. The two teams will continue a game that was suspended June 27. If the continuation goes off as planned, Jansen will become the first player in MLB history to appear in the same game for both teams. Jansen, who was traded from Toronto to Boston on July 27, was at the plate for the Blue Jays with one out and an 0-1 count in the top of the second inning when play was halted. The game will be part of a day-night doubleheader.

  • Red Sox's Danny Jansen: Homers in loss

Jansen went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Royals. Jansen has gone 6-for-14 over four contests since he was acquired via trade from the Blue Jays. The catcher has settled into a backup role behind Connor Wong, though Wong can also play first base to give Jansen a path to some at-bats. For the year, Jansen is hitting .226 with a .702 OPS, seven homers, 20 RBI, 28 runs scored, 13 doubles and no stolen bases over 65 games.

  • Red Sox's Danny Jansen: Contributes to win

Jansen started at catcher and went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Mariners. Jansen delivered a game-tying run with a sixth-inning single, which eventually led to the extra frame. He's made two starts (one at DH) since being acquired from the Blue Jays and his 4-for-7 for his new team. Connor Wong remains the starter at catcher, while Jansen is expected to see steady dose of work against lefties.

  • Red Sox's Danny Jansen: Makes debut for Boston

Jansen started at designated hitter and went 2-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's 8-2 loss to the Yankees. Jansen, who was acquired from the Blue Jays on Saturday, made his debut for Boston. The catcher served as the DH and gives the Red Sox a needed right-handed bat that can harm lefties, against whom Jansen has a .718 OPS this season. He replaced Reese McGuire (.533 OPS against lefties), who was designated for assignment, as the Red Sox's backup to catcher Connor Wong.

  • Red Sox's Danny Jansen: Shipped to Boston

The Blue Jays traded Jansen to the Red Sox on Saturday in exchange for infielders Cutter Coffey and Eddinson Paulino and right-hander Gilberto Batista. Jansen has split catching duties with Alejandro Kirk this season, logging 228 plate appearances across 61 games. Jansen has had a down season at the plate, posting his worst OPS (.672) and ISO (.157) since 2020 with a .212 batting average. He'll likely notice a decrease in playing time with the Red Sox, as Connor Wong is in the midst of a career season behind the dish with an .802 OPS. Instead, Jansen will likely supplant Reese McGuire as Wong's top backup, though Jansen could also see some at-bats at designated hitter.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Resting Saturday

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Exits starting lineup

Jansen is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Rays. Jansen is on the bench for the second game in a row and has now started just three of the last eight contests. A .429 OPS since June 1 is surely the primary reason for his dip in playing time, but Jansen is also an impending free agent and potential trade candidate ahead of the July 30 deadline. With that in mind, the Blue Jays may be preparing to hand primary duties at catcher over to Alejandro Kirk.

Jansen is slashing .214/.305/.375 with six homers and 27 runs across 220 plate appearances this season.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Sitting out again Friday

Jansen is not in the lineup for Friday's contest versus the Tigers. Alejandro Kirk started at catcher in five of the final eight games before the All-Star break and is behind the dish again for the second-half opener. While it might be too soon to say Jansen has been passed up in the pecking order, it does appear to be a 1A/1B situation at best for Jansen with Kirk after he had previously been the clear top option. Jansen has just a .467 OPS since June 1.

Jansen is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians. Alejandro Kirk will take over behind the plate after Jansen started the first two games of the series. Jansen enjoyed a hot month of May, but his bat has gone cold to begin June; he's just 5-for-35 with two extra-base hits (both doubles) in 11 games so far this month.
