Orioles' Pete Alonso: Gets $155 million deal from Orioles
The Orioles signed Alonso to a five-year, $155 million contract Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
After losing their closer earlier this week, the Mets now watch their slugging first baseman walk out the door. The $31 million average annual value is a record for a first baseman. Alonso -- who just turned 31 over the weekend -- put together one of his better seasons in 2025 with the Mets, slashing .272/.347/.524 with 38 long balls and 126 RBI. The Orioles are now overloaded with first baseman/designated hitter types and seem likely to deal from that surplus for pitching help.

Pete Alonso: Officially opts out of contract
Alonso became a free agent Monday after opting out of his contract, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Alonso wound up having to settle for a two-year, $54 million contract with the Mets last offseason, but he had the ability to opt out after the first year of that deal and has unsurprisingly done just that. The first baseman slashed .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs and 126 RBI for the Mets in 2025. Alonso is not eligible to receive a qualifying offer this offseason, which should help his market.

Mets' Pete Alonso: Opting out of contract
Alonso said after Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Marlins that he plans to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract and become a free agent this offseason, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million contract with the Mets in February, which included an opt out after the 2025 season. For the second season in a row, Alonso played in all 162 games for the Mets, batting .272 with 38 home runs, 126 RBI, 87 runs scored and one stolen base. The slugger will now enter free agency with plenty of interested suitors for his talents, though a return to the Mets could remain a possibility.
