  Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said prior to Sunday's 5-4 11-inning win over the Yankees that Reynolds isn't expected to begin a throwing program until later this week while he manages right triceps soreness and will remain limited to serving as a designated hitter for the time being, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Reynolds, who went 1-for-5 with two RBI on Sunday, has served as the Pirates' DH for six straight games. The Pirates aren't concerned that the injury will be a long-term concern for Reynolds, and his fantasy outlook shouldn't change dramatically in the short term while he's available to fill the DH spot. Rather than Reynolds himself, his injury has had a more negative effect on the fantasy value of Andrew McCutchen, who has made just a pair of starts in right field in the Pirates' last six games. The Pirates likely aren't eager to give McCutchen regular playing time in the outfield, so he's expected to continue sharing right field with Jack Suwinski until Reynolds completes his throwing program.

  Reynolds went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and three strikeouts in Friday's 9-4 loss to the Yankees. Reynolds continues to be limited to designated hitter while battling triceps soreness that affects his throwing. It's not enough to keep him away from the plate, and he was able to smack his first homer of the season when he went deep off Max Fried in the third inning. Reynolds is batting just .194 with three RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base across eight contests, but he should continue to play regularly as long as his triceps issue doesn't get worse.

  Pirates senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Reynolds has been dealing with right triceps soreness that has impacting his throwing, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. It helps explain why Reynolds has been in the designated hitter spot for three straight games and four of the last five contests, as his hitting is not affected. Reynolds has started all seven games so far and it does not sound like the triceps issue will keep out of the lineup. However, it has affected the playing time of Andrew McCutchen, who has been out of the lineup for three straight contests.

  Reynolds said Tuesday that he's focusing on being a right fielder rather than potentially seeing some time at first base, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Reynolds began working out at first base in September as the Pirates kicked around the idea of using him there at least on a part-time basis. However, even after the injury to Spencer Horwitz (wrist/thumb), it does not sound like Reynolds is being considered as an option to play first base. Fantasy leaguers should not be counting on the 30-year-old gaining dual eligibility.

  Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Tuesday that Reynolds will remain focused on playing the outfield even after the injury to first baseman Spencer Horwitz (wrist), Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Horwitz underwent right wrist/thumb surgery last week and is expected to be sidelined for 6-to-8 weeks. Earlier this offseason, the Pirates discussed using Reynolds some at first base, prior to their acquisition of Horwitz. While Reynolds could still eventually see some time at the position, it does not appear he will be one of the prime candidates to fill in there while Horwitz is on the mend. Jared Triolo, Billy Cook and Darick Hall loom as the in-house options to man first base while Horwitz is out.

Reynolds has never played first base in pro ball, but he began working out there in September of this past season. The soon-to-be 30-year-old graded out as one of the worst outfield defenders in baseball in 2024, ranking in the first percentile in Outs Above Average. How much action Reynolds ultimately sees at first base could depend not only on how well he takes to the position but also how the Pirates address the position this offseason.

Reynolds had to be scratched from Wednesday's lineup versus the Cardinals after his back locked up on him when he was getting out of the car earlier in the day. However, Shelton said it was mostly a matter of the day game not giving Reynolds enough time to get loose and that the outfielder was moving around normally by the time the contest was over. It sounds like Reynolds should be back in the lineup Friday in Arizona following the club's scheduled off day Thursday.
