White Sox's Bryan Hudson: Gives up four runs, takes loss

Hudson (3-3) was tagged with the blown save and the loss Friday against the Astros after allowing four runs on three hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one.
Hudson entered the game with the White Sox leading by four after Davis Martin allowed one run and loaded the bases in the sixth inning. However, Hudson gave up a bases-clearing double to Christian Walker and a two-run homer to Cam Smith, and he'd allow two more baserunners before exiting the game. This outing snapped an impressive streak from Hudson, who hadn't given up a run in his previous five appearances while posting a 3.68 ERA in 14.2 innings since the beginning of June before this game.

Hudson earned his fourth save of the season and first since June 10 versus Atlanta. The White Sox weren't in a pinch with the bullpen after using just two relievers Tuesday and with an off day ahead, so it's at least interesting Hudson got the save chance. Grant Taylor worked a two-inning relief outing earlier in the game and Sean Newcomb didn't pitch. The White Sox's bullpen remains firmly in committee mode, making it tough for fantasy managers to target any one reliever for saves. Hudson has played his role well, pitching to a 2.08 ERA despite a 1.20 WHIP and 42:16 K:BB through 43.1 innings. He's added four saves in six chances this season, in addition to six holds.

After Chicago leaned heavily on its bullpen Tuesday, Hudson was asked to handle the ninth inning Wednesday and protect a one-run lead. The left-hander worked around a one-out walk to Eli White and successfully closed out the victory for his third save of the season. The save comes on the heels of a rare rough patch, as Hudson had allowed multiple runs in back-to-back appearances after holding opponents scoreless in 26 of his previous 27 outings. Despite those recent hiccups, he still owns a strong 2.32 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 28:14 K:BB across 31 innings and should continue to operate as a setup man for Chicago.

Hudson (3-1) earned the win in relief in Friday's extra-inning win over the Tigers. He allowed an unearned run and struck out one over one inning of work.
Hudson pitched the 10th inning and saw the Tigers grab the lead when Matt Vierling scored on a sac fly from Rikuu Nishida. However, Hudson earned the win after the White Sox stormed back with a walk-off homer from Miguel Vargas in the bottom of the frame. Hudson has gone six straight outings without allowing an earned run, and he's given up just three runs (two earned) across 13.1 innings this month, a span in which he has a 1.35 ERA with an outstanding 0.90 WHIP.

Chicago trailed for most of the game before making a late comeback. With a three-run lead heading into the ninth inning, manager Will Venable didn't summon regular closer Seranthony Dominguez, who pitched three of the previous four days. Instead, Venable went with Grant Taylor, who was the victim of an inning-opening error behind him and who then gave up a pair of runs while retiring just two batters. With runners on second and third, two outs and Chicago hanging onto a one-run lead, Hudson was called upon to escape the jam, and he was able to do so by retiring Adam Frazier on a groundout. Hudson has had a good season with a 1.38 ERA and 16:8 K:BB through 13 innings, but Dominguez should get the bulk of the team's save opportunities moving forward.
