Top Kevin Gowdy News

  • Kevin Gowdy: Becomes free agent

Gowdy was released by the Mets on Monday.

Gowdy struggled to find success at Double-A Binghamton, where he posted a 9.64 ERA and 2.20 WHIP with a 12:9 K:BB across 9.1 innings. He'll search for an opportunity elsewhere after being handed his release Monday.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gowdy: Invited to Jays camp

Gowdy signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays on Tuesday and received an invitation to spring training.

Gowdy spent all of last season with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate, where he logged a 4.56 ERA and 1.57 WHIP over 51.1 innings. The 27-year-old will almost certainly need to improve upon those numbers in spring training to have a shot at making Toronto's Opening Day roster. Otherwise, he'll fill in as organizational depth at Triple-A Buffalo.

  • Rangers' Kevin Gowdy: Shipped to Rangers

Gowdy, Spencer Howard and Josh Gessner were traded from the Phillies to the Rangers on Friday in exchange for Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy and Hans Crouse, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Gowdy was fairly highly rated as an over-slot 42nd overall pick back in 2016, but he's been limited by Tommy John surgery and last year's canceled minor-league schedule to just 147 total innings as a professional. The 23-year-old owns an unremarkable 4.43 ERA in 61 frames for High-A Jersey Shore this season, though he's been hurt by a .356 BABIP, as his combination of a 24.0 percent strikeout rate and 5.7 percent walk rate is a good one.

  • Phillies' Kevin Gowdy: Opens at Low-A

Gowdy is listed as healthy for Low-A Lakewood, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.

Gowdy received a first-round caliber bonus after being selected with the No. 42 overall pick in 2016, but he has pitched just nine pro innings since then, largely due to Tommy John surgery he underwent in August of 2017. He has missed a pretty dangerous amount of developmental time, but it's possible that the talent that netted him a $3.5 million bonus in 2016 will finally shine through now that he is fully healthy.

  • Phillies' Kevin Gowdy: Out for all of 2018

Gowdy (elbow) will miss the 2018 season, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports.

He underwent Tommy John surgery in mid August of last season, so it would have been very unlikely for him to pitch in 2018. Gowdy was seen as a first-round talent in the 2016 draft, and landed with the Phillies in the second round on an over-slot deal. Unfortunately, injuries have limited him to nine professional innings.

  • Phillies' Kevin Gowdy: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Gowdy (biceps, elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.

Gowdy did not appear in a game this season as he's been dealing with a bout of bicep tendinitis. The 19-year-old has apparently also been plagued by an elbow ailment and will now undergo Tommy John surgery on his right arm. He'll certainly be out the rest of the 2017 season and could potentially miss all of 2018 as well.

  • Phillies' Kevin Gowdy: Sidelined with biceps tendinitis

Gowdy has yet to pitch this season due to biceps tendinitis, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.

Gowdy has been throwing according to Joe Jordan, the Phillies' director of player development, and is expected to pitch for one of the team's affiliates this summer. Gowdy was the Phillies' second-round pick in 2016 and was rated as the top high school pitcher in California by Baseball America last year.
