The Cubs recalled Ferguson from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Ferguson was sent back to Triple-A after throwing two shutout innings during Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets, but he'll now rejoin the big club to replace Hoby Milner (abdomen). The 32-year-old Ferguson will likely be limited to low-leverage opportunities while with the Cubs.

Ferguson was sharp, retiring all six batters he faced in his first two-inning outing since May 21. The right-hander has been solid in September, posting a 2.89 ERA and 0.75 WHIP across eight appearances and 9.1 innings. His season line of a 4.79 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 54 outings and 56.1 innings looks rougher, but those numbers are heavily skewed by two blowup appearances on May 14 and June 18, when Ferguson allowed a total of 11 runs.

The save was Ferguson's second of the year and his first since May 4 in Miami. The 31-year-old right-hander has rattled off 7.1 consecutive scoreless innings, though he likely still has work to do before the Athletics trust him in the high-leverage mix on a consistent basis following the Mason Miller trade. After Mason Miller threw 28 pitches in a blown save Saturday, Ferguson got the call in the ninth inning Sunday, with the A's holding a one-run lead. The 31-year-old Ferguson made quick work of the Marlins, retiring the side on just 11 pitches, to pick up his first save this year. Ferguson retired Victor Robles, J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez on swinging strikeouts and needed just 12 pitches to do so. Ferguson then was rewarded for his pristine work when the Athletics walked it off in the bottom of the ninth with Shea Langeliers' solo home run, which afforded Ferguson his second win in the last three appearances. Ferguson clearly has the stuff to work in high-leverage, late-inning spots whenever closer Mason Miller is unavailable, which was the case Monday after Miller threw 34 pitches in a rough 1.2-inning outing Sunday.
