  • Brett Martin: Becomes free agent

Martin (shoulder) was non-tendered by the Rangers on Friday. Martin did not pitch at any level in 2023 while recovering from January shoulder surgery. The 28-year-old lefty reliever is now a free agent.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Heads to 60-day IL

Martin (shoulder) was placed on the 60-day injured list by the Rangers on Friday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. It's a procedural move for the Rangers, as Martin is going to miss at least the first half of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery on his left shoulder late in January. It clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Robbie Grossman after the veteran outfielder's one-year deal became official.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Set for surgery

Martin will undergo surgery on his left shoulder next week, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. Martin hit the injured list in late September with a left shoulder strain. The fact that he's only now getting surgery nearly four months later suggests the issue may have gotten worse while he attempted to get ready for the upcoming season. An exact timeline for his return has yet to be offered by the Rangers, though the lefty is expected to miss most of the 2023 season.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Avoids arbitration

Martin (shoulder) and the Rangers agreed on a one-year, $1.275 million contract Friday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Martin and the team were able to avoid dealing with the arbitration process. The left-hander ended the 2022 season on the 15-day injured list with a shoulder injury, and he recently suffered a setback that will affect his availability for most of the 2023 campaign. Martin will require surgery and should be considered out indefinitely until the team releases a recovery timeline.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Moved to injured list

Martin was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a left shoulder strain. Martin was previously listed on the bereavement list, but the move to the 15-day IL will end his season as the Rangers have just 10 games left this year. The 27-year-old lefty will finish the season with a 1-7 record and three saves to go along with a 4.14 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Lands on bereavement list

Martin was placed on the bereavement list Friday. Players are allowed to spend between three and seven days on the bereavement list, so Martin will be unavailable for the Rangers' weekend series against the Guardians. Joe Barlow (finger) was reinstated from the injured list to take Martin's place in the bullpen.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Can't stop Angels' rally

Martin (0-7) took the loss and a blown save in Saturday's 9-7 defeat against the Angels. He was charged with two runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. Dennis Santana made a mess of things early in the eighth inning, allowing three of the four batters he faced to reach base. Martin wasn't able to settle things down, uncorking a wild pitch that allowed the tying run to score before giving up a two-run double to Luis Rengifo. In his last six outings, Martin has allowed at least one run five times and multiple runs in three of those appearances. He now has a 4.24 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 28:14 K:BB in 34 innings this season. He's picked up three saves and four holds, but he now has three blown saves, and the southpaw could soon be shuffled out of the closer role if he can't get back on track. Per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News, manager Chris Woodward was saving Jonathan Hernandez for the ninth inning Saturday, which suggests he could be the next man up for closing duties if Martin loses the job.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Not used for save

Martin was not used in a save situation Thursday, as Matt Moore closed out a 2-0 win over the Angels. It's not clear if Martin was available, as he pitched on consecutive days leading into the game but had thrown only 18 pitches in total Tuesday and Wednesday. He has been filling in as the Rangers' closer, but the left-hander's most recent work may have played a role in not being used Thursday. Martin's given up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings spanning his last four appearances.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Struggles continue

Martin was handed a blown save during Tuesday's 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Mariners, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. After Texas took the lead in the top of the ninth, Martin was called upon for the save and immediately surrendered two hits to tie the game. A sacrifice was followed by two intentional walks to load the bases before Carlos Santana ended the game with a walk-off sacrifice fly. The 27-year-old has now permitted runs in four straight appearances -- including five over his last two games -- on the heels of 12 straight scoreless outings. The recent troubles have increased his ERA from 2.61 to 3.86, hinting that Martin's time as closer may be short-lived.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Loses in non-save situation

Martin (0-5) allowed one unearned run on three hits while striking out one over two innings, taking an extra-inning loss to the Mariners on Saturday. Martin, who has recently filled in as the closer after Joe Barlow (blister) was removed from the role before hitting the injured list, entered a tied contest in the ninth inning. After getting the game into extras, he allowed a pair of hits and the automatic runner to score in the 10th. The left-hander remains an option to close games going forward, though manager Chris Woodward could look elsewhere now that right-handed bullpen stalwart Jonathan Hernandez was activated off the injured list Saturday.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Converts third save

Martin allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Monday's 10-8 win over the Athletics. Martin made it a bit interesting by putting two runners on with two outs, but he struck out Chad Pinder to end the threat. All three of Martin's saves this year have come in his last three appearances, and he has a 3.2-inning scoreless streak. With Joe Barlow out of the closer role, it appears Martin has gotten the first look at the bulk of the ninth-inning duties. Dennis Santana and Matt Bush are also expected to get save chances based on matchups, but Martin's made the most of his opportunity with effective results so far. The southpaw owns a 2.89 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 24:10 K:BB through 28 innings this season.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Possible waiver wire pickups

The left-handed Martin didn't seem like the obvious choice to replace Joe Barlow, who the Rangers surprisingly chose to remove from the closer role this weekend. Dennis Santana had already established himself as the eighth-inning guy, boasts the better numbers of the two and, well, throws right-handed. But there was Martin getting the first chance post-Barlow Friday, with Santana working the eighth, and just to drive home the point, the two filled those same roles Saturday. It wasn't a matchups thing either. Martin faced the heart of the Twins lineup Friday. There's no telling if he'll hold up in the role, particularly since his strikeout rate is subpar, but he does keep the ball on the ground. Anyone with a chance at consistent save opportunities deserves a look in most leagues.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Earns save in close game

Martin picked up the save with a perfect inning in Saturday's 9-7 win over Minnesota. He didn't strike out any batters. Martin earned the save after inducing two groundouts and a flyout. He needed 10 pitches to help the Rangers secure a win. It was Martin's second save of the season and gives him a save in back-to-back appearances. He has not allowed a run since May 29 and has lowered his ERA from 4.67 to 3.00 during that span.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Secures first save

Martin struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to earn a save over Minnesota on Friday. With the Rangers recently removing Joe Barlow from the closer's role, Martin saw his first save opportunity since April 11. He needed just 10 pitches to retire the Twins in order and finish off the 6-5 win. Martin's riding an 8.2-inning scoreless streak dating back to the start of June, lowering his season ERA to 3.12 through 26 frames. The 27-year-old has an 0-4 record with four holds and a save on the year.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Serving as opener Saturday

Martin is serving as the opener during Saturday's game against the Nationals, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. The Rangers initially planned to use Matt Bush as an opener Saturday, but he was unavailable after he pitched in relief Friday. As a result, the team will turn to Martin, who will be making his first start since 2019. The southpaw has been effective since the start of June, as he's tossed four scoreless innings over four appearances this month.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Activated Thursday

Martin (COVID-19) was activated ahead of Thursday's game against the Tigers, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. He last pitched June 5, so Martin's arm should be pretty fresh. The southpaw has a 4.34 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 18.2 innings this season.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Goes on COVID-19 IL

The Rangers placed Martin on the COVID-19-related injured list Tuesday. Texas hasn't specified whether Martin was deactivated due to a positive test for the virus or due to symptoms that could be related to COVID-19, but either way, he won't be available for at least Tuesday's doubleheader with the Guardians. The Rangers will replace the reliever on the roster with infielder Andy Ibanez, who is starting at third base and batting ninth in the first game of the twin bill.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Loses fourth game

Martin (0-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning against Oakland. The Athletics walked off Martin, who has a 6.30 ERA over his last 12 appearances and 4.67 for the season. Some of that may be due to luck. The left-handed reliever sports a 2.90 FIP while opponents have a .345 BABIP off him.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: Locking in

Martin struck out two over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning in Sunday's 2-0 loss to Oakland. Martin kept the Rangers close by cleaning up a one-out, bases-loaded mess created by Albert Abreu. The left-hander retired two righty batters to keep it a 2-0 game in the fifth inning. Since giving up runs in each of his first three outings, the high-leverage reliever has thrown five scoreless frames, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out four and earning two holds.

  • Rangers' Brett Martin: In search of clean inning

Martin allowed one run on two hits and a walk over one inning in Thursday's 10-5 win over the Angels. Martin finished up the blowout win and probably wasn't being too fine with his pitches, but the left-hander has not had a clean inning yet in 2022. He's allowed runs in all three outings thus far, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out one over 2.1 innings.
