  • Phillies' Jose Ruiz: Notches first save of career

Ruiz allowed two hits and a walk in a scoreless ninth inning against the Nationals to pick up his first save of the season. He struck out two. Ruiz was extremely shaky in his first save opportunity of 2024, loading the bases with zero outs before producing a pair of clutch strikeouts. He induced a Juan Yepez flyout to end the threat and pick up the first save of his eight-year career. The 29-year-old veteran was a serviceable bullpen arm for Philadelphia this season, logging a 3.71 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 52:17 K:BB in 51 innings, adding five wins and one save.

  • Phillies' Jose Ruiz: Called up to Philadelphia

Ruiz had his contract selected from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday. Ruiz will join the Phillies 26-man roster in place of Yunior Marte (shoulder) who was put on the 15-day injured list. Ruiz has been excellent at the Triple-A level, boasting a 1.64 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP with a 13:3 K:BB across 11 innings. He should slot into a middle-relief role.

  • Phillies' Jose Ruiz: Removed from bullpen competition

The Phillies reassigned Ruiz to minor-league camp Sunday. The right-hander, who was attending camp with the Phillies as a non-roster invitee, fell short of winning a spot in the Opening Day bullpen despite striking out eight and allowing just one run over 10 innings in Grapefruit League play. Ruiz previously spent time at the big-league level with the White Sox and Diamondbacks in 2023, logging a 5.89 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 39:21 K:BB across 44.1 innings.

  • Phillies' Jose Ruiz: Lands MiLB deal with Phils

Ruiz agreed to a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Monday. The deal includes an invitation to big-league spring training, though Ruiz should be viewed as a long shot to secure a spot in the Phillies' Opening Day bullpen. Over 38 big-league appearances with the White Sox and Diamondbacks in 2023 spanning 44.1 innings, Ruiz posted a 5.89 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 39:21 K:BB while serving up 10 home runs.

  • Jose Ruiz: Elects free agency

Ruiz elected to become a free agent Thursday. Ruiz spent much of this season with the National League champion Diamondbacks before being removed from the 40-man roster just after the All-Star break. The 29-year-old will now look to latch on with another organization.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Ruiz: Designated for assignment

The Diamondbacks designated Ruiz for assignment on Tuesday. After giving up three runs over 1.2 innings while serving as Arizona's opener Sunday, Ruiz will be cast off the 40-man roster to clear room for Merrill Kelly (calf) to return from the injured list. The 28-year-old righty holds a 5.89 ERA and 1.65 WHIP through 44.1 innings this season and may be headed to this third different team of 2023.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Ruiz: Struggles as opener

Ruiz did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits over 1.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out one. Ruiz was roughed up by the Reds in his 1.2 innings of work, allowing five total hits including a solo homer to Elly De La Cruz in the first and a two-run shot to Nick Senzel in the second. The outing continued a rough stretch for Ruiz, who's allowed six total runs across his last four appearances (five innings). Through 38 outings (44.1 innings) split between the White Sox and Diamondbacks, Ruiz owns a 5.89 ERA and a 39:21 K:BB.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Ruiz: Draws opener assignment Sunday

Ruiz will serve as the Diamondbacks' opening pitcher Sunday at Cincinnati, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. Arizona is treating the series finale as a bullpen day, with Ruiz likely only handling the first one or two innings. He's posted a 3.92 ERA and 35:17 K:BB in 39 innings of relief for the Diamondbacks since they acquired him from the White Sox on April 9 in exchange for cash considerations.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Ruiz: Gets call for save

Ruiz (1-1) was tagged with Wednesday's extra-inning loss to the Phillies. He allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out one over one-plus innings. Ruiz entered a save situation in the ninth inning as neither Miguel Castro nor Andrew Chafin were available and retired the first two batters, but he was unable to get out of the inning. Trea Turner's two-run home run sent the game into extras where Ruiz allowed the automatic runner to score without recording an out. It was a tough loss for the Diamondbacks, who squandered a 5-0 lead and did not have their three most trusted relievers following a stretch of heavy usage. Ruiz has a 7.15 ERA with 18 runs, 29 hits and 11 walks allowed over 22.2 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Ruiz: Knocked around Thursday

Ruiz allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and one walk over one inning in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Giants. Ruiz has pitched well for the Diamondbacks since being acquired from the White Sox in early April, posting a 3.00 ERA and a 13:1 K:BB over 12 innings before things went sideways Thursday. Most of his appearances have come in low-leverage situations, but that pattern could change. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo talked to Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic about the team's recent bullpen struggles, suggesting some of the "negative role" guys, like Ruiz or Kyle Nelson, could be used in a "positive role." Recent blown leads could be attributed to over-work of Lovullo's most trusted arms, namely Miguel Castro, Andrew Chafin and Scott McGough -- all of whom had appeared in 17 of the team's 37 games entering Thursday. That's unlikely to mean Ruiz will be getting save chances, but he could pitch in higher-leverage spots.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Ruiz: Dealt to Arizona

The Diamondbacks acquired Ruiz from the White Sox on Sunday in exchange for cash considerations. Ruiz was designated for assignment Friday and finds a new home a few days later. The right-hander struggled mightily before being removed from the Chicago's 40-man roster, allowing nine earned runs over 3.2 innings across four relief appearances. The 28-year-old has no minor-league options remaining, so he'll immediately join the Arizona bullpen as a middle-innings option.

  • White Sox's Jose Ruiz: Dropped from 40-man roster

Ruiz was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The right-hander struggled in four appearances with the White Sox in 2023, giving up nine earned runs over 3.2 innings. In his place, Jesse Scholtens was called up from Charlotte on Friday.

Ruiz signed a one-year contract with the White Sox on Friday to avoid arbitration, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. Ruiz put up a 4.60 ERA for the White Sox last season, although he did fan more than a batter per inning. He'll be utilized in a middle relief role in 2023.

  • White Sox's Jose Ruiz: Strikes out two, allows hit

Ruiz allowed one hit while striking out two over one scoreless inning Thursday against the Athletics. Ruiz has now pitched five scoreless innings after allowing five runs to the Astros back on Aug 18. Over that span he's allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out six. It's been an up-and-down year for the White Sox reliever, as he opened the season with five holds and a 2.70 ERA through the month of April before surrendering eight runs over 11 innings in May and seeing his ERA jump to 6.55. Ruiz has, however, been very efficient on the road this season, sporting a 1.93 ERA over 23.1 innings while recording 23 strikeouts to just seven walks.

Ruiz (knee) was seen riding an exercise bike Sunday and seemed comfortable doing so, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Ruiz was removed from Saturday's game and was not available for Sunday's contest despite looking fine on the bike. White Sox manager Tony La Russa was hopeful a stint on the injured list could be avoided.

  • White Sox's Jose Ruiz: Fires two scoreless innings

Ruiz allowed one hit and struck out two over two scoreless innings in Tuesday's 9-0 win over Cincinnati. • White Sox's Jose Ruiz: Secures roster spot

The White Sox plan to include Ruiz in their Opening Day bullpen, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Since Ruiz already possesses a spot on the 40-man roster, the White Sox won't need to make a corresponding transaction to make room for him. Over 52 career relief appearances in the majors, Ruiz owns a 5.11 ERA and 1.84 WHIP in 49.1 innings.
