Cardinals' Dustin May: Three scoreless in spring debut
May yielded one hit and one walk over three scoreless frames in his Grapefruit League debut Thursday versus the Pirates.
The Cardinals had May work on the side and on the backfields early on in spring training to ease him into his buildup. May was sporting big velocity Thursday, averaging 97.8 mph with his four-seamer and topping out at 99.3 mph. It's a good sign after his velocity on the pitch dipped to a career-low 95.4 mph in 2025. May has some bounce-back potential after inking a one-year, $12.5 million contract with the Cardinals this winter.

Cardinals' Dustin May: Velocity up in simulated game
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that May was sitting 97-to-98 mph and touching 99 mph in a simulated game Friday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
May had trouble keeping weight on following surgery for an esophagus rupture in 2024, and his fastball velocity dipped to a career-low 94.8 mph in 2025. That prompted him to pack on around 20 pounds over the offseason in hopes of regaining the pep on his heater, and the early returns are promising. The Cardinals have May on a slow build-up this spring after his past injury issues, but he is healthy and should make his Grapefruit League debut before long.

Cardinals' Dustin May: Has put weight back on
May said Thursday that he currently weighs 220 pounds after pitching the 2025 season at 198-202 pounds, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
May had surgery for an esophagus rupture in 2024, which made it difficult for him to keep weight on. His goal this offseason has been to put that weight back on, and he hopes to be up to 225 pounds by spring training. May's fastball velocity was in the 59th percentile in 2025 after it was routinely in the 90-plus percentile in previous seasons, and it's possible the weight loss had something to do with it. The 28-year-old also noted that his arm is "back to normal" after he finished the season on the injured list with right elbow neuritis. May took a one-year, "prove it" contract from the Cardinals in hopes of bouncing back and reestablishing his market next offseason.

Cardinals' Dustin May: Signs with Cardinals
May signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals on Saturday that includes a mutual option for 2027, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
May set a new career high with 132.1 innings pitched between the Dodgers and Red Sox in 2025, though his 4.96 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in the regular season both marked significant regression from previous years. Despite his recent struggles, the 28-year-old righty should have little trouble claiming a spot in a Cardinals rotation that doesn't feature much depth following the departure of Sonny Gray.

Dustin May: Fully recovered from elbow injury
May said Thursday that he's "fully back to normal" after his 2025 season ended due to right elbow neuritis, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
May made his last appearance Sept. 3, but he resumed throwing later that month and said he would have been available to pitch in the ALDS had the Red Sox advanced. The right-hander's free-agent market could be volatile. May had easily his heathiest season in 2025, throwing 132.1 innings, but his velocity was down and the results (4.96 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 21.1 percent strikeout rate) were mostly underwhelming. That said, he's a young free agent at 28 and has flashed frontline starter ability before, which could make him an interesting flier for teams shopping below the top of the market.

May threw a live bullpen session Tuesday and will follow that up with a second session Friday. He won't return during the regular season, but he is hoping to be healthy enough to be available for the postseason.

Red Sox's Dustin May: Throws bullpen session
May (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
May landed on the 15-day injured list last week with right elbow neuritis. While May appears to be trending in the right direction, Red Sox manager Alex Cora conceded that the righty has "maybe" run out of time to contribute down the stretch. Even if May is deemed healthy enough to return this month, his role is very much in flux, as he's posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 26:13 K:BB over 28.1 innings with Boston.
