Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Played through ankle injury in 2025

Gimenez admitted he was still playing through pain at the end of last season after returning from a high-ankle sprain in August, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports. "Anyone who's had a high-ankle sprain," Gimenez said in camp this week, "they know."
The 27-year-old infielder was an overall disappointment in his first season with Toronto, slashing a career-worst .210/.285/.313 during the regular season and swiping just 12 bases after back-to-back 30-steal campaigns for Cleveland. Gimenez will shift to shortstop on a full-time basis in 2026, and while his defense should still be an asset, his ability to stay healthy and provide some value with his bat and legs would be a welcome sight in a Jays offense that will be adjusting to the offseason departure of Bo Bichette.

Gimenez delivered a pair of big hits, kicking off the scoring with a two-run home run in the third inning. He came through with a two-RBI single five frames later, and he has now driven in six runs in his last two games. Gimenez has posted a .310/.355/.552 OPS across 32 plate appearances this postseason.

The Toronto second baseman tallied a homer and a steal in the same game for the seventh time in his six-year career. Gimenez stretched his team's lead to 5-0 with a 422-foot solo shot off Minnesota starter Joe Ryan in the second. The 26-year-old entered this contest mired in a cold spell, slashing a paltry .188/.297/.188 in 37 plate appearances since returning from an ankle injury Aug. 12. Perhaps this performance will get Gimenez going, as his elite glove continues to keep him in the starting lineup.
Gimenez is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Cubs.
Gimenez started in the first two games of the series upon his return from the injured list, but the left-handed hitter will take a seat Thursday as the Cubs send southpaw Matthew Boyd to the bump. Ernie Clement will step in at second base for the Blue Jays.
