Andres Gimenez has developed into one of the game's best defenders at any position. Unfortunately, he regressed at the plate in 2024 for the second straight season, managing a lousy .638 OPS and wRC+ of 83 while popping only nine home runs. He also ranked in the bottom 10 percent in baseball both in hard-hit rate (28.5 percent) and walk rate (4.1 percent) for the second year in a row. Gimenez was not a lost cause in fantasy, however, thanks to 30 stolen bases and a 15.3 percent strikeout rate which allowed him to keep his head above water in the average department. The left-handed hitting Gimenez was dreadful versus southpaws in 2024 (.574 OPS) and looks like more of a bottom-third of the lineup hitter, but his defense ensures his spot in the everyday lineup. For fantasy, think of him as a stolen-base specialist and consider anything else he might provide to be a bonus.

  • Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Getting first day off

Gimenez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox. After starting the first 11 games of the season and clubbing three early homers, Gimenez will hit the bench Tuesday while mired in a 1-for-13 slump across the past four contests. Davis Schneider will take over at second base and bat sixth in his place.

  • Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Busy on basepaths Monday

Gimenez went 0-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases in Monday's win over the Red Sox. The 26-year-old infielder has been flashing surprising power in the early going this season, but speed remains an important part of his skill set. Gimenez stole exactly 30 bags in each of the prior two seasons with the Guardians, and he's 3-for-4 on steal attempts through 11 games to begin his stint as a Blue Jay.

  • Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Power surge continues Monday

Gimenez went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, a stolen base, a walk and an additional two runs scored in Monday's 5-2 win over Washington. Gimenez got the Blue Jays into the scoring column with a solo shot in the second inning Monday. The 26-year-old former All-Star has put together an impressive power display during the very early stages of the campaign, as he's now slashing .333/.455/.944 with three long balls, two doubles, five RBI, and seven runs scored through five games. Although the slugging percentage is unsustainable, the speedy Gimenez is certainly thriving as Toronto's cleanup batter so far.

  • Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Goes deep in loss to Orioles

Gimenez went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, walk and strikeout in a 9-5 loss to Baltimore. After hitting just nine home runs in 2024 over 583 at-bats, the 26-year-old is already up to two homers through three games this year. Gimenez was acquired by Toronto from Cleveland in December and has batted cleanup in the first three games of 2025, so it appears he'll have more RBI potential with his new club.

  • Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Shoulders offense Thursday

Gimenez went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk in Thursday's 12-2 loss to the Orioles. Gimenez supplied all of the offense for the Blue Jays on Opening Day, taking Orioles right-hander Zach Eflin yard for a two-run shot in the fourth inning. It was interesting to see the speedy Gimenez, who went 13-for-46 (.283) with two homers, 11 RBI and two stolen bases during spring training, bat cleanup Thursday, but he should see plenty of RBI chances if he sticks in the No. 4 spot in Toronto's lineup going forward.

  • Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Batting cleanup Thursday

Gimenez is starting at second base and batting cleanup in Thursday's opener against the Orioles. He's an atypical cleanup hitter, but Gimenez's fantasy stock receives a boost while he's hitting behind Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero and Anthony Santander. The former Guardian slashed .252/.298/.340 with nine homers during the regular season for Cleveland in 2024.

  • Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Shows off wheels Friday

Gimenez went 1-for-2 with a walk, a triple, a run scored and two RBI in Friday's Grapefruit league game against the Astros. The second baseman dropped a deep fly to right-center field over the head of minor leaguer Quincy Hamilton in the first inning and raced around the bases for his second triple of the spring. Gimenez has gone 8-for-30 (.267) in Grapefruit League action with a 4:6 BB:K, and he's gotten a number of looks in the leadoff spot. While he isn't likely to begin the season at the top of the order, Gimenez's fantasy value would get a boost if he worked his way into that assignment later in the year.

  • Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Bound for Toronto

The Guardians traded Gimenez to the Blue Jays on Tuesday alongside Nick Sandlin in exchange for Spencer Horwitz and Nick Mitchell, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Gimenez had a down year offensively in 2024, slashing just .252/.298/.340 with 63 RBI in 152 games. However, the 26-year-old infielder is coming off his second consecutive 30-steal campaign and has developed into one of the game's best defenders. His glove will almost certainly keep him in the lineup everyday for Toronto, and he still has potential to bounce back at the plate after posting an .837 OPS just two seasons ago.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Sitting Sunday

Gimenez is not in Sunday's lineup against the Cardinals. Gimenez is 8-for-16 with one home run, two doubles and a steal in his last four games. Daniel Schneemann will start at the keystone and bat second against righty Andre Pallante.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Homers in Friday's win

Gimenez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 5-1 win over the Cardinals. Gimenez has nine homers this year, three of which have come over 19 games in September. He's slugging .412 this month compared to .342 for the year, though he's routinely had fairly modest power numbers. Aside from the dip in power, his numbers this year look similar to his work in 2023. He's batting .253 with 62 RBI, 30 stolen bases, 64 runs scored, 21 doubles and a triple over 147 games in 2024.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Supplies walk-off knock

Gimenez went 3-for-5 with a double and one RBI in Thursday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Twins. Gimenez logged his first multi-hit effort in over a week, and it was his third hit that sealed the win for the Guardians. He's batting .263 (20-for-76) with five extra-base hits and eight RBI over 18 games in September, and he's added five stolen bases in that span. The second baseman is up to a .253/.301/.337 slash line with 30 steals, eight home runs, 61 RBI and 63 runs scored over 146 games this season.

Gimenez went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base in a 5-4 extra-inning victory versus Minnesota on Wednesday. Gimenez scored the game-winning run in the 10th frame after drawing a walk as the second batter in the inning. Prior to that, the second baseman singled and stole second base in the fifth frame. That theft was Gimenez's 30th of the campaign, marking his second straight season reaching 30 steals.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Adds steal in win

Gimenez went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Rays. Gimenez didn't show much speed through July, but he's now logged 13 thefts on 15 attempts across 41 games since the start of August. The second baseman is up to 29 steals on the year, one shy of matching his career high from last year. He's maintained a .253/.302/.338 slash line with eight home runs, 59 RBI, 62 runs scored, 20 doubles and one triple over 141 contests.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Swipes bag in win

Gimenez went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and one RBI in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the White Sox. Gimenez saw a seven-game hitting streak end Monday, but he was right back at it with his second multi-hit effort of the month. The second baseman's improved batting in the second half of the season has helped him return to the No. 2 spot in the order versus right-handers after spending much of the campaign in the bottom half of the lineup. Gimenez is now at a .254/.304/.342 slash line with 28 steals, eight home runs, 58 RBI and 60 runs scored over 137 contests.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Three hits, two steals in loss

Gimenez went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases in Saturday's loss to the Dodgers. Gimenez singled and stole second in his first at-bat and added a leadoff knock in the seventh before swiping his second bag of the night. The second baseman would go on to reach three times in the contest, and he's now hit safely in six straight games to open the month. It marked his second two-steal effort this season and his seventh game with at least three hits. Gimenez is now slashing .320/.370/.640 in September with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Opens scoring with long ball

Gimenez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers. Gimenez opened the scoring in the top of the sixth inning. The second baseman hasn't hit for much power this year, but he has three homers over his last seven games to give him eight long balls on the year. Overall, he's slashing .251/.303/.343 with 57 RBI, 60 runs scored and 25 stolen bases through 133 contests.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Pops homer Sunday

Gimenez went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Pirates. Gimenez gave the Guardians an early lead with his first-inning solo shot, one of four homers for the team in the win. The second baseman has struggled to hit for power in 2024, but he has two homers over his last three games. He's gone 10-for-39 (.256) over his last 10 contests and now has a .251/.301/.335 slash line with seven homers, 54 RBI, 58 runs scored and 25 stolen bases through 129 games this season.

Gimenez later swiped second base in the seventh to collect his ninth steal in the month of August and 25th of the season. The 25-year-old is now slashing .254/.305/.333 with 57 runs scored and 53 RBI across 528 plate appearances.

Gimenez went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and one run scored in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Rangers. Gimenez has seven steals across his last 14 games, but he's batting a poor .208 (10-for-48) in that span. It's encouraging to see him take chances on the basepaths even when his opportunities are limited, but he has just one extra-base hit in the aforementioned sample. The second baseman is up to 23 steals on 26 attempts this year while adding a .251/.303/.328 slash line, five home runs, 50 RBI and 51 runs scored through 120 contests.

Gimenez went 0-for-4 with three walks and a stolen base in Tuesday's 9-5 extra-innings win over the Yankees. Gimenez has posted six steals over his last 11 games despite going hitless six times in that span. He's now in an 0-for-10 slump over his last three contests. The second baseman has a .252/.304/.331 slash line with 22 thefts, five home runs, 50 RBI and 50 runs scored through 117 contests overall, as his lack of power and modest hitting have yet to cost him a starting spot in the lineup.
